Hi folks,

I am a returning player, coming back to the instrument after a 25 year break. Back in the day, I spent most of my time on E9 instruments with just three pedals and one knee lever, so by the time I had a fully loaded E9 12 with 5 and 4, I had developed my own habits and made little use of the extra pedals and levers. Now I am playing a Carter Starter and find the LKL and LKR (E to F; E-Eb) very useful. However, I have found little practical use for the RKL (B-Bb). I assume this is a useful change since the Carter is meant to offer the most standard copedant. Can anyone tell me some typical uses of the B-Bb lever? I would think a raise on 7 and 1 (F#-G) would be handier.

Also, for those of you who teach or find yourself in a position to advise a beginner on a start up instrument, I would strongly advise against a one lever instrument. I say this based on my own experience. I got fairly proficient playing a 3 and 1, but coming back to it fresh I can see how many cumbersome shortcuts and work-arounds became ingrained in my playing by having to fudge licks that really required the raise and lower on the 4th and 8th strings. I never would have said this at the time (I felt like I could get those licks with what I had), but it seems quite clear to me now.

Dan

Many thanks CrowBear!

I clearly should have searched the forum a little more thoroughly.
