Bill, I'm not sure who plays for Vern on the road, but Jim Vest actually played on Vern's records. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10 |

Bill,
Thanks for asking, because I started to post that same question a while back! I saw Vern Gosdin and Connie Smith (rowr, rowr!) at the Alabama Theatre about 3 weeks ago and that guy playing steel for Vern smoked!
Thanks,
Bryan

Actually it was pretty sad. The crowd was very understanding and cheered him along, but he struggled with timing, staying on key and remembering lyrics.
Even as big of a fan as I am of Vern, I would have never paid the price we had to pay for tickets to see him and Connie, had I known it would be that bad. Connie should have come by herself.
Got to give him credit for trying though. I hate it for him because he is REAL country music, and there'll never be another one like him. Breaks my heart.
Regards,
Bryan

Bryan,
Same in Montgomery. I agree with all you said. Biggest problem folks here had was he sang with his back toward the audience. The young girl with him from Kansas was good and the steel picker was great. It is truly sad. The "VOICE" should consider retiring.
Regards,
Bill
Is the Jugtown Steel club still meeting? I somehow have not heard anything or any activities from them.

Is Vern having problems other than age ? He's been a favorite of mine since before I played his records on the radio.

John,
Vern had a stroke a few years back and lost some movement on one side as I recall. He may have suffered another stroke recently, I don't know. He had trouble walking, standing, singing, timing, lyrics and sang to the band instead of the audience. Every time there was a singing break he would say "pick it Merle" even when the piano player was taking the ride. He had some awful jokes written down on a note pad and told some very bad jokes. Like I said he may have serious health problems. Many people sitting around me stated he was drunk. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, knowing he had at least suffered a serious stroke a few years ago. I told the people as much and they to a word said that they knew he had suffered a stroke , but there was no excuse for being drunk. Like I said, I don't know if he was drunk or not. I would certainly hope not. Either way it was a bad performance. The steel man was super. Wish we could identify the steel man, give him his proper due and cut Vern some slack. Hope this clears some confusion up for you. If anyone knows of Vern's problems would appreciate a post and especially the ID of the steel man. Someone has to know who he is. This man is GOOD!!!!!!!!
Regards, Bill |

Did the excact same thing here Bill. Kept his back to us, and yes that little gal was good also. This was strange though...when he sang harmony with the gal, he was dead on. It was only by himself that the trouble was pronounced.
As far as being drunk, I am positive that it was effects of the stroke, not alcohol. (JMHO)
The Jugtown club still meets as far as I know. I'm not able to be actively involved since I started pastoring about 2 years ago. Hard to get from preaching mode to steeling mode back to preaching mode all in one Sunday afternoon! Good group of folks though.
Back on subject...WHO'S THAT MONSTER PLAYER???!!!???

The last few jobs that Vern has done James Shelton played for him. I did 6 or 8 shows with him last year. Vern is well known for taking out different people all the time. There are several reasons for this, the biggest one is , He just doesn't work that much and guys book other work and he'll book a date at the last minute.
Vern does suffer the effects of a couple of strokes he had a few years ago and does appear to be drunk. It's greatly affected his motor skills.
Brett, Your right that Jim Vest played on a bunch of Vern's records but not all of them. Before Jim he had used Sonny Garrish[ "If Your Gonna Do Me Wrong Do It Right"] comes to mind. Also Vern's first major album had Buddy Emmons on steel. Vest did tunes like "Set 'Em Up Joe", "Chiled In Stone", etc. Bill, Vern's not saying Pick it Merle, He's saying Pick it Earl. An insider joke about Lester Flatt.

Mike,
Thanks much for the info. Glad to know Vern's problems are not chemical induced. Really a shame since he is such a great Country singer. If the steeler was James Shelton he is good. He sounded just like the records. Also backed up a man from West Virginia who sang some good George Jones songs. Please give my regards to Thersa and and Queenie a piece of ice for me. Hope to make CHOO-CHOO show and see yall again.
Bryan, Thanks to you also. Hope you have time to pick that FESSY from time to time.

Funny thing Bill...I went to bed one night and when I awoke, that Fessy had turned in to a mid 70's LDG!
Had it about a year now and absolutely love it. A forumite bought the Fessy, it's now out west. I hope to get to go to Choo Choo if they schedule a seminar. Maybe I'll see you there.

I was not at the Vern concert so this is only a guess. Wayne Bridge played steel for him for some time. When Vern was here in Cullman a while back,Wayne was doing the work for him. I did not see that concert either but a friend of mine did and talked with Wayne at the time. I have not seen Wayne in a few years but when I did he was playing a Sho-Bud Super pro...black. He is an extremely talanted musician. |

Well if this ain't just turned into an "Alabama Boys" reunion!
How you doin' Harold?! Long time no see!
Hope all is well with you.
The guy playing with Vern in B'ham was playing a Zum. If memory serves me right, I think it might have been a black one, but I'm not sure.
God bless,
Bryan
