Is there an online data base that one could tap into for more info re manufacture, precious owners, etc? Short of having to bother the manufacturers with silly questions one could this consult such a data base. Information that is common knowledge today, could be hard to come by in, say, another twenty years time. Besides just looking for info, all steel owners could also submit all relevant details to this data base. All makes and models should be listed and expanded on as more info becomes available. Your thoughts on this idea??

To my knowledge, no common database exists. But it's an interesting idea.
Based on your description I'm not sure exactly what you want the focus to be -- specifications only; opinions; historical info; tips; fun facts? Too wide a range could make it less than useful.
I might be willing to program this and provide web hosting if there were enough interest and consensus on the direction. |

As an example: I recently acquired an Emmons P/P with serial number "1447 D". It would be interesting to know not just when it was built, buy also some history like who were the previous owner/s, and was it used on ,say, any wellkwown recordings (or any), etc. Likewise, my first steel was ordered during 1079/80 (basket finish, SD12 with pad on on C6 neck). I still play this instrument (original pickup), and the sound is pure Emmons. We all have to move on and one day these instruments will go to new homes. Perhaps we are so caught up in our present day dealings with this instrument that we do not realize that here is an instrument that was conceived during our time, with most of the builders and originators of copedants and tunings still al;ive and amongst us. As with all things, this situation will start to change in the not to distant future. Steel players, and builders etc., may one day thank us for having had the foresight to leave a data base behind for them to built on and ensure that this unique isntrument maintain its place in the annanls of history. It is like buying an antique violin, and wondering about its history. Boy, I sound like some proffessor of something.
I'm sure you know what I mean.

Hi Nic, its nice to know there is another steel player in South Africa besides Sez Adamson and Paul Kreeif. Sez and I are great friends, and he is a great, great steel player, and a great guitar player. Has steel guitar gained any ground in SA? or is it still an alien instrument? I lived in SA during the late 70s and early 80s, and as far as I know,Sez was the first musician to record with a pedal steel in your country. It was on a single I recorded there in 1976. If you see him, or Paul, pass on my regards.

Hey Nic, here is a link to the D10. http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum9/HTML/000023.html
I suggest you email Doug Jones for more info.
And remember Robyn's S10? I emailed to Emmons directly and they gave me all their information they had on file. So you can ask them about your D10 and also about your "basket case".
Good luck

Ned,
I know both Sez and Paul very well. Sez used to work down here in Cape Town for a few years, but since he moved back to Johannesburg we sort of lost touch. I think my friend Peter den Hartogh used to be in regular contact with him. I will get Sez's contact detail;s from him and tell him you said Hi! I agree, Sez is a great player. From what I hear it seems that Paul packed it in some years ago. I doubt if he still plays. There are a few Steel owners over here. (Enough said). Steel guitar and Copuntry music has a very small following over here. Guys likle Peter and myself do however keep on slogging away at the instrument that we both have a passion for. I even had the audacity to release an album. Go to this link and check it out.
