Hey all, take a listen to the first finished track on my new album. I co-wrote, sang, played guitars and pedal steel on it. Let me know what you think... http://www.natelapointe.net/download.html
just scroll to the bottom of the page to "Trim Sessions" and listen to "Keep Me By."

Hey Nate, I love that style of music. Reminds me of Poco, America, Burrito Bros. and the other great west-coast country-rock bands.

Nice steelin' Nate.
I must admit that I'd personally prefer a less mid-rangy sound on the steel, but know from own productions that it can be difficult to have the steel stand out if other guitars are mixed with approximately the same eq settings and reverbs.
I like the style anyway - Nice going

Thanks guys, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I am pretty happy with the tone of the steel, I love the sound of my 76 Twin!
Most of my stuff is west-coast country-rock but other stuff is more rock and soul. I'll keep posting if y'all keep listening.

Nate, please don't be offended with any of this. I'm just trying to help you along with some constructive criticism.

Musically, it's a good first effort. (Reminds me a little of a song by "America".) But the lyrics. I listened to them a dozen times, and they leave me just a little confused. I'm trying to make sense of them...

"Take me with you when you walk away..."

Walk away from whom or what? Is (this person) walking away from you? Or maybe...someone/something else? (This person) can't leave you and take you with them at the same time...at least that's my understanding of the situation.

"So I go although I mean no harm..."

Go where? Go with this person? Go away from this person? Go away from your "home"?

These are all good lines you have in the song, but I can't make much sense of them. It seems some of them don't go together, they're a little incongruous. Here's another confusing line...

But if I stay I'll surely die."

Stay where? Stay with this person? Stay away from this person? Stay away from home? And then later, you sing...

"Tell everybody that I say hello..."

That means you're not there with this person, right?

Okay. What overall idea are you trying to convey with these lyrics? To me, If I take the song lyrics literally, it sounds like you just want to stay with this person who has no love for you, who has no feeling for you.

Is that it?

However, if the song is intended to be obscure and open to various interpretations, just forget all the comments above!

Hi Nate,

Great sound. Very enjoyable song.
Almost like John Fogerty meets George Jones.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for listening.

Donny, your questions about the lyrics are valid ones, it was written to convey a sense of apathy. He is confused and lost but just wants someone to be there for him, even if it's not true.

"If I stay I'll surely die" means that if he stays alone when she leaves he'll die of a broken heart.

I like writing music that can be interpretted by the listener in whatever way they see fit. And I appreciate your challenges to me to try and explain what I meant a year ago!
