Herb deserves every honor that can be bestowed on a steel guitarist, and not just because he's such a great player, but because He is also such a learned scholar.
Herb is originally from L.A. and where he and I were in high school together. At that time, we were not exposed to Western Swing or (then) contemporary country music. We were exposed to bluegrass, and Herb in addition to being a fine steel player, is also a fine mandolin player. In fact, Bill Monroe was sufficiently impressed with him that he once gave him a free lesson.
Many people here grew up listening to country and swing. Herb did not. Instead, he studied it, almost as an anthropologist would. I think it's safe to say that Herb knows more about country music and western swing that most people who grew up listening to it. He could probably write books about it if he chose.
I'm honored to have known him all these years and proud to call him my friend.

Congradulations to you Herb. Long overdo.I'm sorry I can't be there but I certainly think it is well deserved. Don McCord was my first ever taste of anything that resembled and guitar lesson. I'm sure that many steel guitarist can place roots to Don McCord. |

Herb, that is some wonderful news. You're not just a wonderful player. but one of the finest people I have met (even if just by e-mail ) in my years of steel playing. You are as great an example of what a steel player should be, as a musician AND a person, as there is.

Congratulations, Herb!
My favorite musical memory of the Herbster is one that I didn't even experience in person. I was listening to the steel convention over the internet a few years back and listened to a number of pretty interchangeable sets. I was just about to shut it off when Herb came on and did a set of low down, in the pocket, soulful, laid back swing. Like Lon Chaney's hair, it was perfect. One of the best sets I have ever heard at a steel convention.
