Hey folks:
Who else is playing at SXSW in Austin this year? I'm playing on Saturday night but am wondering who I should catch around town the rest of the week. As for the locals, I know Ricky is playing, and I imagine that at least Herb and Neil are too (guys, can you post your playing schedule for the week?). Who else is playing day parties or showcases? Man, I miss living in Austin.
Thanks,
John

John
I know Neil is playing tomorrow night, Wednesday. And Ricky works what seems to be all the time. However, since I left the James Hand band, my work has fallen off DRASTICALLY! I play about two or three jobs a month with Johnny Bush, and only occasionally with Pauline Reese. And only very rarely in Austin. Other than that, zilch.

Kind of makes me feel a little washed-up, actually.

The BBC is spending plenty of our licence fee sending folks over.
Tonight we had a prog. on BBC radio 2. showcasing `The Broken Spoke`.
Hopefully, it will broaden interest in Texan music.
Cheers, Arch.

I'll be playing six-string on Friday Night at The Continental Club. I play lead guitar for Jon Langford.
Herb I was hoping to catch you with The Cornell Hurd band on Saturday Afternoon. Are you not playing that gig?

I haven't been with Cornell Hurd for about 18 months. He has a wonderful steel player named Scott Walls right now. You'll like the show I'm sure.

Wow--I had no idea Scott Walls was picking with Cornell Hurd now. I haven't seen him since way back when with Don Walser! Herb, I hope for everyone's sake you get back out there more. I imagine that it's your choice not to play as much, but there are many bands in Austin that sure could use you!

Thanks for the update Herb. Cornell's website still shows you as the steel player. I am sorry to miss your playing.

John, with whom are you playing on Sat night?

Herb, I was hoping to see you play also this time.
John, where are you playing?
I'll be at the Yarddog Fri (see you there Grant)and The Parish Sat nite with the Waco Brothers, (Langford gets around doesn't he).
If anyone has a good steel amp and pack-a-seat they can loan me let me know. I always seem to get stuck with a tiny distorted amp. Fortunately our fans have usually been drinking.

Hi Ricky, have you played any giggs with the Norwegians yet? I hope they do well over there. Hope to be there next year.

I neglected to mention that I will be out of town with Johnny on Saturday, though if I wasn't, I'd probably be hanging out at Texicalli for the Cornell thing.

Although I unfortunately will NOT be in Austin, a subset of Last Train Home, with special guest, our pal Aussie NonPedal-Steeler/Guitarist/World Class Smart-ass Jeff Lang (on friday's show) will be performing- from eric's email:

quote:
FRIDAY MARCH 18
6 pm
D&L Texas Music Cafe
1321 South Congress Ave.
512-445-4441
LTH is gonna be on in the middle of a great day of music at this swell
little venue. Here's the full Friday line-up there:
Noon Hot Shots (Japan)
1pm Nathan Hamilton & No Deal
2pm DB Harris
3pm Katy Moffatt & Rosie Flores
4pm Carolyn Wonderland
5pm Eric Hisaw
6pm Last Train Home *with Jeff Lang
7pm Jon Emery
8pm Schooley's One Man Band
9pm Bill Kirchen
10pm James McMurtry
11pm Twangbangers

SUNDAY MARCH 20
2 p.m. sharp
The Cotton Club
212 E. Davilla St.
Granger, TX
512-859-0700
LTH is proud to kick off this bill that begins at 2 pm and runs 'til
long after dark. We'll only play 3 or 4 songs, but for a great cause,
the Gingerbread benefit, to help pay the medical bills of Ginger, the
wife of today's host, Ernie Durawa, during cancer treatments. To get
to the Cotton Club:
Go north out of Austin on I 35...after about 10 miles turn right on
Hwy 79 towards Taylor...at Taylor turn left at Hwy 95 and go ten
miles to Granger and turn right at blinking yellow light ( Davilla
Street)...and the Cotton Club is two blocks on the right. The club is
more than 100 years old. A great slice of Texas history.

SUNDAY MARCH 20
4:15 pm
Gruene Hall
1281 Gruene Rd.
New Braunfels, TX
830-606-1281
LTH will be opening up this afternoon show headlined by our old D.C.
pal Bill Kirchen. As he does every year, Bill holds court at Gruene
Hall from 4 to 8 pm on the Sunday at the end of SXSW, and he kindly
asked LTH to play an opening set from 4 to 4:45, so we'll be zooming
down from Granger to play this incredible old dance hall.

So you can check 'em out and imagine what it would sound like with me playing, just like I am...

Looks like there will be a lot of great shows and folks to see this week! I'm playing lap steel in Western Keys, what I guess is considered an 'indie-rock' band, on Saturday night at 9 at the Velvet Spade (is this a new place?). I won't know whether or not to recommend it until we practice for the first time on Saturday morning! But hopefully it won't be too bad. I am excited to bring my recently acquired '59 deluxe-8 down there.

We don't get down there until tomorrow, but I will be sure to be at the Texas Music Cafe at 3 for what looks to be a great lineup of shows! Heybale is set to play in betwen Billy Dee and Dallas Wayne, so maybe I'll see some of y'all there. Ricky, aren't you playing at 6 with Dallas Wayne?
