Last night I turned to Brad on CMT (here it's channel 7Cool; I like his music a lot and there was a young man in the back and I believe he was playing a "Franklin" psg. I just wonder if he is Mike Johnson? Anyway, to me, I was disappointed that I couldn't hear the psg much; especially when he did the "fishing song", which I think has a killer lick that I have been trying to copy. Did anyone else see this?

I don't get CMT, but I believe Randle Currie plays with Brad and he does play a Franklin....Quite well!

Charles, that steel player would have been Randle Currie. Randle is Brad's regular steel player and he played on the 'Mud on the Tires' album. Mike Johnson was on some of the earlier albums though.
Randle, a young Canadian guy, is a great steel player who also toured with Martina McBride and I think Brian White. This gig with Brad Paisley must be wonderful....Brad being an incredible instrumentalist himself. Of course there might be one drawback...Brad is a top notch guitar picker so most of the featured solos are bound to be six string electric. Randle Currie's talent shines through nonetheless.

Yeah.. I like his playing too, but all too often the steel is a "bench warmer" in modern country music.. behind the vocals, guitar, fiddle etc... What I hear of it on Brad's latest is real good stuff... bob

I think that Brad is an amazing guitarist, so are a lot of other guys, it's just that I wanted to hear the psg too. I don't get out much so I don't know either of the psg musicians, but that lick on the "fishing song" is the reason I bought the CD. Maybe someone will ask Brad to lay back a little; hey I remember what it's like when there are pretty girls in the audience.

Donny and Bob....yeah, but don't forget one very important thing, at least Brad Paisley does have pedal steel on most of his stuff, even if it takes a backseat to his own picking. You gotta give him credit for that.

uhh..Brad Paisley..is about Brad Paisley...

Everyone else is in a supporting role...

as they should be..

IF you would like to hear a bit more Steel take a listen to the Part II and Pictures CD's with Mike Johnson..Mike is a bit more out
front...playing amazing stuff..as always..

Take a listen to Brad playing "Sharp Dressed Man" with Mike J. on Steel..this one will make you take a step back for sure...

Brads band is probably my favorite right now...no room for snoozin with this bunch...Randals playing on the MUDD CD is also most excellent.

But if you are looking for consistent out front in your face Steel this may not be the place, this show is about Brad and his Tele..as nit should be .

Tony.. fair enough, you are correct... But in the past, Buck Owens was about Buck Owens.. BUT Brumley's steel SHONE like a beacon!! I can run down a list, but you know the story as well as I do! Not long ago, the steel was a prominant and beloved component in country music... today, even with some of the greatest steel players on behind thier guitars, steel is a "flavoring".. just a taste.. always kept "down in the mix".... under control ...while the "artists" get the glory..I dunno,, it just kind of bugs me.... bob

Keith, I'm fairly certain it was Mike Johnson on Sharp Dressed..this is what I have been told...but I have no problem being corrected here...

Bob, I guess the differences between Brad and the "BUCKS" of the world is that for the most part the primary singers / main acts were not the primary Instrumentalist extraordinaire..if they were it may have been a different scenario...If Buck were a mind blowing Tele dude we proabably would have heard Buck singing those great songs and twanging away and heard less from the supporting cast ...

But trust me, I'm ok with having experienced Tom Brumley and Don Rich too...

As I remember it, Conway Twitty could pick with the best but he let John do his thing, hit after hit. I think someone quoted Buck as saying they "worked as a team". I believe that Don Rich could have had his own thing but he undoubtedly liked singing with Buck.

I have to agree that Randle is one heck of a player. I have see that bunch live. Brad does wear the strings off his telecaster, which is awesome, but he lets the other guys show off too. I am a big fan of that group. Brad is a top rate musician, and so is his band.

I also have to say that I wanted to hear a bit more ofRandle cutting losse, it was there, but keep in mind that this was an edited TV show, there could be a focus moment for the steel in the complete live show, and its true its all about his tele playing, but I have to say he sure featured the fiddle a lot, I think a lot of this comes from the production choice made in the studio, but it could have been worse, he did cut loose a couple of times.

Even when Vince Gill was touring with John Hughey.. he featured John on several steel based tunes - "Look at Us", "When I Call Name", "Don't Come Cryin", etc...

It can be done and done tastefully...

I really like Brad too but with a band like that he COULD feature Randle as much as he features Justin Williamson -his fiddle player.

My $.02
