Today I was watching the Westerns Channel on Cable, there was a old B/W Western "Blazing the Western Trail" 1945 .
Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys were in the movie.
Who played Steel with Bob in 1945 and
Who played Fiddel with Bob in the movie?
He played a D-8 I think and he held it in his lap no legs....
The Star of the movie was Charles Starrett(The Derango Kid) and Tex Williams I think.I also saw Dub Taylor as Cannonball
Thanks
Larry

The steeler was most certainly Noel Boggs, as he played with Bob during that brief period, and sometimes played a double-neck on his lap. I'm going to guess the fiddler was Joe Holley. |

I'd agree with Noel Boggs as the steeler but if it was Joe Holley on fiddle he played left handed....JH in Va.

I played six string a couple of times with Joe Holly in the sixties and I believe he did play left handed. Played very progressive, sounded great.

Here is a still from the movie and the flyer...
Noel Boggs was Bob Wills' steel player on most of the 1945 activities, also Les Anderson played on a few 1945 recordings.
Kind Regards, Walter

You guys know a lot more about this issue than I do -- but I've known Noel since 1949 when we were there doing another Charles Starrett movie, and that picture doesn't look like Noel to me. That movie was filmed in 1945, and Noel could not have changed in appearance that much in 4 years. The nose and protruding chin are just not Noel's. I may be wrong, but I'm not convinced that it is Noel in the picture -- and I couldn't even "hazard" a guess at who it is.
