Friends,

I got a haircut and a bath, but I have got no response to my solicitation to rent a steel guitar rig and sousaphone in Washington DC.

Can anyone suggest someone in the Washington area whom I could call or email? I know that most of you guys are too wealthy and too busy, but perhaps you know of some impecunious young person or music-shopkeeper who could use the money.

The dates will be March 11 and 12. References are available.

Washington Music, about a 15 minute drive from DC will probably be your best bet to rent a sousaphone. 301-946-8808 Billy Cooper's shop will take over a 4 hour drive (round trip), he has a huge inventory of steels but I don't know if he rents them out.

Earnest.. Unfortunately, I am in NY state, and DC is a 9-10 hour drive each way. I would be glad to let you borrow [not rent] a steel, however I don't know how we could work out the logistics, also my steel setup is totally ass backwards in comparison to what most players today use. [ My old Fender amps are also insufficient I'd bet]

I too think you should contact Billy Cooper, and let him know what you need . He's in business and I'm sure that sometime in the past he has been asked to accomodate the needs of touring pros.[which IS what you are after all!]bob

Thank you all.
I think I have a steel guitar rig lined up.

But I still need a sousaphone!

I sincerely think Gary's suggestion of contacting Washington Music is your best bet. 301-946-8808 They have a full service band department that rents all sorts of brass instruments, I have a hard time believing they wouldn't have a sousaphone or know where you could get your hands on one.

Mr Bovine,

Pardon my asking, but as a former D.C. player who still has some ties to the scene there I'm curious as to what type gig you're playing in Washington?

I bought my first steel at the Washington Music Center in 1973; Yep, a used Sho-bud Maverick; my life went straight to hell that day and hasn't recovered since!

Good luck and have fun!

The show is a concert, actually 4 shows in 2 days, with singer/actress Megan Mullally. She does mostly acting nowadays, and only a 2 or 3 singing gigs per year. Those gigs are usually around here (Los Angeles) where I can just throw a steel and my beat up old tuba in the back of the truck, which explains why I don't have road cases or gear for traveling.

That's a "different" combination of instruments. It gives the term "utility man" new meaning.

I think I'll take my baritone horn to the next gig!
