Saw a film Called Road To Nashville on DVD produced in 1966. A hokey premise but some good picking and singing. Anyone out there knows who was playing steel for Kitty Wells, maybe Russ Hicks. Also Faron Young, Bill Anderson, Marty Robbins? The only steel player who was introduced was Jimmy Crawford playing with Hank Snow. Also was Ruby Wright Kitty and Bob Wrights' daughter? She was singing harmony with Bill Plillips. Thanks

Dickie Overbey with Faron Young. And yes, Ruby is their daughter. She did a great job on her duet with Bill Phillips in that movie.

That was, I believe, Canada's own Bob Lucier with Bill Anderson. Been a long time since I've seen the movie - I suspect it is as hokey as it ever was!

Ya think "Road..." was bad? Check out "Second Fiddle To A Steel Guitar"! Same premise. At least "Road..." is listed in the Leonard Maltin Movie Guide. Listed as,"Inept promoter tries to line-up talent for Country-Western jamboree. The music's not bad, when the plot gets out of the way."

I could stand corrected - I had thought that Bob Lucier had done a stint with Anderson, and have a dim recollection of someone pointing out that that was Bob in that movie.

Hey Lyle, Ruby is the daughter of Kitty Wells and "Johnny" Wright... Bob or Bobby Wright is their son and her brother who also traveled with the show and had a couple of pretty fair records on his own some years back. He also had a recurring acting role on McHale's Navy for a few years as one of the crew....JH

I wish somebody had access to the original film so they could re-format the DVD to "widescreen". The "fullscreen" video formatting chops off the sides of the original film shots. That's where the steel players are. We can barely get glimpses of them on that DVD. The real highlight for me was Dickey Overby. He just rips it up on there. And Ruby... She sings harmony so sweet on "Put It Off Until Tomorrow". Otherwise the flick is painfully self-indulgent on the part of Marty Robbins, and the direction is just dorky and clumsy and reeks of low budget. That yodeler who backs Marty is pretty amazing too. Actually, the music is so good and all live that it overshadows the B- production quality and makes for a good disk to have. Great quick shot of young Jimmy Crawford nodding at the camera too.

Bob Lucier! Canada's "King of the Steel Guitar,' if memory serves.

And how about Pee Wee Charles, who toured with Gordon Lightfoot in the 70s?

As they say, "Where are they now?" Anyone know anything? This is the first mention of Lucier I've seen in the forum, and I don't think I've ever seen any of Charles.

James, Bob Lucier was at the ISGC in St. Louis a few years back - 2002 I think. He played a fair bit in the Fulawka room. He was playing an SD-10 Fulawka, and still plays great. He put out a cd a few years back as well, which I have though the title escapes me - a great player.

Yep, Bob was on the Hunter show in that time frame. I used to make a point of watching that show for the "live" portion, where there walways seemed to be a good shot of Bob playing, if only for a few fleeting seconds. Tommy Hunter was just through town here, with Steve Smith playing steel, and forumite Steve Pittico (who many here have run into in St. Louis or Dallas) on guitar.

To Jerry Hayes and others .I played a TV Christmas show at a Veterans Hospital in Danville Illinois back in the late 70's and Kitty and Johnny and Bobby were on the show but no Ruby or steel player. What a disapointment. What ever became of Bill Philips?
