I know George Strait's steel guitar player has been with the band as long as its been around. What is his name?

Joe, I believe Mike Dailey[sp] is still with George. There are 2 Mike steelers and I can never get the spelling down. I believe the other Mike is spelled differently and has done some recording and work around Nashville. I defer to resident expert Brett Day for the definitive answer

Yeah, I think you're right about Mike Daily. I like George Strait for his music but also because he's had the same band for as long as he's been known. That's a dream gig, but I think they have the right people our there for it. His band can even act ( a little bit) in the movie Pure Country.

Hi Joe, just wanted to make a correction about the 'Band' in Pure Country, they showed Rusty having alot of screen time with the drummer who is actually a LA actor/musician whose name is John Doe from the punk band " X ". Anyway Im sure the rest of the band is original but I had to chime in cuz I played some gig with John Doe..

Did the Nashville Mike Daly play steel guitar in a band called Free Beer in the 70's?

Ya'll forget......Mike's Band HIRED George after an audition for a Frontman/vocalist AND THE REST is hISTORY..i THINK MIKE HAD MADE AN EARLIER POST and indicated that the original band is basicly Intact. But it's Paul and the Nashville crew on the tapes,disks..and whatever,,
But don';t take it from me..I'm no expert..I just know what I read.

Bob, I'd say the band made a pretty good choice of a front man!

I thought that I had read somewhere that Paul Franklin had played Steel for George Strait . I'm more than likely mistaken.

Mark..Hope to get to the office to meet you soon .

Gregg, PF may have laid tracks in the studio on some of George's CD's, but I'm pretty sure Mike D. has been his road player since day 1.
Come on by anytime. I'll let you buy me lunch!

The very first Strait cuts, such as "Unwound" had John Hughey on steel. Then when George first went mega-hit, such as "Right or Wrong" and "You Look So Good In Love", had Weldon on steel. Soon after Paul got the account. Buddy and Sonny Garrish played on the movie sound track and Buddy played on an album that was either before or after the movie. Most of Straits albums have at least one cut where his band plays. One of his hits, "Gone as a Girl Can Get" was actually Mike. Mike gave me the tab to that recording.

First off, let me say "WELCOME BACK" Jack. I have really missed your insight on this forum.

Also on the "Pure Country" soundtrack was Doug Livingston.

re: the "Free Beer" and the Nashville, M.D.
I've known Mike a long, long, time and to my recollection, he's never mentioned a band called "Free Beer", (inasmuch as the name conjures a pleasant image) . Mike's early band duties were in the Northeast Ohio area and included , Buckeye Biscuit, Deadly Earnest, Reckless Abandon, Kenny Hughes, and then on to Nashville where he picked up with Becky Hobbs' band, Gibson/Miller, still with Hank Jr., and now he's doing a good bit with Pat Green. Lot's of studio stuff and showcases along the way too.

If I'm not mistaken (and I've been known to be) isn't Pat Green's steel player named Mike Daly (sp?), or is that the same as the Nashville Mike Daly? Somebody's gonna have to start adopting a nickname or something....

Arty, I think it's the same Mike Daily as the George Strait Mike Daily. Although, I saw Pat Green earlier this year and he had no steel player. Maybe he plays with Pat only when George is not touring.

This confusion has been on this forum for years. There are 3 M.D.'s that play steel. All with different spellings. One plays with George, one plays with Pat, one played or recorded with Whiskeytown. Not the same guy in either case. OK. Got it?

I'm not an expert on who came first - George or the band - but I do know that there is a homemade band poster hanging in the "museum" room in the Austin's Broken Spoke (an institution in itself) that advertises "Ace in the Hole Band - featuring George Strait".

I remember attending Jeff Newman's advanced classes in 1982 with Mike Daily -- George had just had his first #1 hit and Mike figured he had better learn how to play this thing properly -- which is why I was there as well, I had just landed the steel seat in the house band of a long-running TV show.
I remember Mike saying that the band had originally hired George (and I think Mike went to school with George as well?).
He called himself Mike D. Daily then to avoid confusion with all the other guys of the same name. Great guy and really great player. He has done very well considering he still plays with George 22 years later !!

The Ace in the Hole band's steel player is a Forumite, look for Mike D. Daily, San Marcos, TX.
