What is the underlying theme song played throughout this old movie? More specifically, while they are cutting Xmas trees on top of the hill?
Need your help. THanx.

Ray, I believe the theme song is "Kings Seranade". The steel player may have been Barney Isaacs or Ernie Tavares.???

Ray, one of the tunes was Waipo. Don't recall in which order they were played though.

I'm sure enough to bet my best boots that the theme played throughout "Donovans Reef" is "Beyond the Rainbow". I played that number one night for some Hawaiian customers that were frequent visitors and they told me the name . [I told them I didn't know what it was.]

"Waipio" is "Beyond the Rainbow" ... melody wise anyway.

The other song played is "Pupu A'o Ewa" ... whose melody line is similar to the tune ... Pearly Shells.

Seems that this movie has a couple of "re-writes" ... old Hawaiian song melodies used in more modern, "english" tunes.

Both "re-issues" were by ... Webley Edwards and Leon Pober ...

I remember "King's Seranade". Used to play that in the late 30's on my old 6 string Supro.
Thanks for bringing back the memories...al

It's NOT Ernie, but, Freddie Tavares, the other player is Barney Isaacs Jr....

with regard to the scene about the Christmas tree...The chant is a made up one as is the following steel guitar link that precedes Barney playing "Waipi'o"..
Both John Marsden and I concur..re the Info..

I decided to look into this matter further....In fact the steel playing in the majority of the music IS as Lorene Ruymar stated, Barney Isaacs Jr.
But both John Marsden and myself have identified the link music player as being Freddy Tavares.. presumably because the links were orchestrated and Freddy was a pretty good reader, whilst Barney didn't let things like that harm his playing !!

So, in a sense everyone is right....great playing by both of them.. well worth buying the DVD for...
As for Lorene's book, there is a review of it and Andy Volks in the current issue of 'Aloha Dream'

In Lorene's book, take a look at the caption on page 61 (Billy Hew Len picture)!!!
My Sub-title would be "maybe he's playing Come FRY with me"

There is a very good example of the two different players near the end of the movie,, the Royal Reception Scene (#16)
Barney plays "Ka Ua Loku" and after the dance sequence Freddie playes "Song of Old Hawai'i"
The contrast of styles is marked, as is the difference in guitars, Barney playing a "Stringmaster" and Freddie playing an earlier "Trap" pick-up Fender Dual Professional..
Barney playing full harmonies and chords in the E13th, whilst Freddie plays mainly twin note or single string in his favourite A6th tuning.
All very good listening..
