I just got a video (also available on DVD) of Red Rhodes playing with Mike Nesmith in 1992 "Live at the Britt Festival" in Jacksonville, Oregon. This has been re-released on DVD & CD & is a wonderful performance of Mike & Red. Red's playing is very understated & really colors the songs of Mike. John Jorgenson is also in the band. Mike & Red have another old album that has been released on CD called "The hits just keep on coming" that is just Mike on acoustic & Red on steel. I don't know of another album like that & it's a must have for any fan of Red's. Both are available at Mike Nesmith's website: http://www.videoranch.com/ |

I've got a 1994 CD reissue of that album, and it seems that all the older CD versions are getting deleted and Nez must be reissuing them as I'm having a real hard time getting any of them at the moment, so I'm going to wait and see.
His first three solo albums were actually with his First National Band and have been issued on the small box set by Nez as well, all fantastic and top notch efforts.
Now that "The Hits.." is out on CD it looks like they'll all be on the way. (hopefully) |

All of Nesmith's old albums (including his big-band instrumental 1968 "Wichita Train Whistle"!) are available on his website, www.videoranch.com .
Most of the individual CDs are mastered from vinyl. They came out in England on Awareness circa 1992 and were later pressed by Nez himself and are now sold on his website. I doubt he is pressing anymore of the RCA albums, since BMG England just released all 6 of his RCA albums on 3 CDs. "Magnetic South"/"Loose Salute," "Nevada Fighter/Tantamount to Treason Vol. 1," and "And The Hits Just Keep On Comin'"/"Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash" are the three CDs and they were mastered from the original tapes, and include bonus tracks of unreleased and rare tracks (including Red's fabulous take of "Rose City Chimes").
DON'T buy the "First National Band Complete" box set or the individual FNB CDs....again, they were mastered from the vinyl LPs. Unless you want to hear turntable rumble.
FWIW, if you have never heard "Loose Salute" or "And The Hits Just Keep On Comin'" you are missing out on two of the BEST examples of pedal steel on record. I'd say they both are up there with the Panther Hall album.
Really.

I'd say "And The Hits Just Keep On Comin'" should be in top 100 lists for great albums. |
