I find it interesting that the first reply was from Auntie Maria (Mele.com) ...'

As it should be.

Wow! That's the official "birth" announcement of the Forum! I'm going to quote it here so that we don't lose it:

New Steel Guitar Forum

Bob Lee Dec 30 1996, 12:00 am

Newsgroups: alt.guitar.lap-pedal
From: "Bob Lee"
Date: 1996/12/30
Subject: New Steel Guitar Forum

I've added a BBS-style message base for the discussion of steel-related
topics to my Web page. This is intended to be a positive and supportive
environment for steel guitarists at all levels of proficiency. I believe
that this forum can provide more focused discussions than the
alt.guitar.lap-pedal newsgroup, because interesting messages will not be
lost amid all the noise that plagues Usenet.

Messages in the Steel Guitar Forum will last much longer than newsgroup
messages, so we won't have to keep replying to the same questions over and
over. Hopeful AOL users will be able to participate through the AOL
browser (though I've heard that it has problems with some Web sites).

At any rate, all steel guitarists are welcome to read and participate in
this new Steel Guitar Forum.
The URL is (drum roll please)....

http://www.wco.com/~quasar/wwwboard/

Hope to see you there!

Great new site! But there are lots of folks on the
newsgroup alt.music.hawaiian who need to know about
this, too, so would you please also post there?

Mahalo and aloha,
auntie maria

I'm sure that the time stamp 12:00 am is bogus, but other than that I'm delighted to see this.

Anyone else think it might be time for another forum upgrade? With better boards like phpbb2 and vbulletin that are out now, ubb is kinda ancient as far as boards go.

What a silly, frivolous pipedream, b0b. Nobody's gonna want to go fire up the computer in their computer laboratory and, what, talk about steel guitar!!! Yeah right.
Next you are going to tell us you have some device that, when you put a loaf of bread in it, it comes out sliced. And then what? A box with slots in it that, when you put those slices in and pull a lever they come out toasted.
Quit your dreaming and get a real job.

Don't foget, the forum has created a new market for steel guitar related music and products. It's quite possible that some of the new CDs we have been seeing come out for the last few years are a direct result of the enthusiasm of forum readers and members.

I would like to testify as a Child Of The Steel Guitar Forum.
The very same week I finally broke down and bought an old Maverick from the classified ads, I ran across the self same notice you read above.
As a steel guitar virgin, I was immediately dropped into a community of people who answered my clueless questions and provided inspiration during bleak periods, as well as planting the seeds for some lifelong friendships.
So, b0b, I'm glad to see that too. Thanks to you, and everyone.

I should add -
The only down side is being reminded that it's 8 whole years later, and I still suck.

thanks, bOb. This really is an incredible feat you've accomplished. I've been a member for six or seven years, and, until then, it would have seem presumptuous to be in the same thread as Buddy Emmons (or the likes), but it happened back then, and I still pinch myself.
