Topic: Any U.S. Troops Playing Steel? |

| I just had a thought about our troops overseas and wondered if any of them are steel players. Maybe you know one of our military men and women that play. I love my steel, but being away from my family and friends, especially at this time of the year, is an experience I do not want to happen again. God bless all our men and women in the Armed Services, at home and abroad. |

Gentlemen,
I don't post here often but need to answer this one. I am an Army Reservist currently deployed in Kuwait to support our efforts in OIF II. I have found a couple of musicians here but no other steel players. Playing opportunities are next to zip with all the force protection measures in place so most musicians stick to woodshedding, if there is time. I have found time to order a new JCH from Jimmie Crawford and CDs from Ron Elliot, Bobbe Seymour, Fran Newman and Lloyd Green. Thanks again to the Elliots and Bobbe for the extra CD gifts and Thanks to Buddy and Lloyd for the autographs!
I expect to finish this tour in February and return home to western Pennsylvania for a late Christmas celebration with family and friends. I have served on active duty numerous times and I'm proud to serve again here and now. I'm sure there are other U.S. Troops serving our country around the world, who play steel guitar and will respond to this post. Thanks for the kind thoughts and words of appreciation.

Paul, I have been in the Air Force for 18yrs and am a First Sergeant. I am stationed in the Azores for the next 15 months. I have been playing steel for 20+ years.

I've been in the Air Force for 15 years and now stationed in Germany. Regularly play with Price, McCall, and Bush ... in my basement that is. Playing Christmas songs with Overbey/Flores tonight!!

man, I played with him while he was here in Ga.Also I played at Service Clubs and such while in the Army does that qualify.

Your Thanks and support for the soldiers serving throughout the world is truly appreciated. I was overwhelmed by well-wishers during my R & R travel to home earlier this year. Our service is much easier when your support is so evident.
Ray Qualls, Best of luck to your sons as they head to Iraq. I turned twenty in my first combat zone. That was so long ago!
Bob Hickish, Your Grandaughter will arrive during the cool time of the year. Good Luck to her.
Mike Taylor, I played for Chris Caldwell in Lawton, OK in 1989. We did a couple shows in Wichita Falls!

This is a cool post we have here.
God Bless all our steel-playing friends and their service mates who are serving and have served.
In the early 70s I did a couple USO tours and we were so appreciated by our service men and women overseas it was incredible. Our sacrifice was soooo small compared to the ones made by those serving our country in the military.

By 1989 I was in the Air Force. I played around North Texas and Southern Oklahoma from '82 - '88. Used to play Lawton every now and again at the Elks Lodge. Had a sit down gig in Wichita Falls for 3 years.
I'll be deploying later this Spring. Have a safe trip home.

Mike, I played Bavaria alot, while I was stationed in Augsburg during the mid-80s. Initially, the band members were GI's but later on I worked for German bands doing country. I recorded with one act and maintain communications to this day. I made a lot of friends, terrific money, and rarely bought a drink. The crowds were great and playing the fests was a blast. They loved the music and let the band know it. Bavaria is Germany's largest and southern most state so they draw parallels to our great state of Texas, including a slightly different accent. I hope you are enjoying your tour as much as I did!

We've been here at KMC for 6 months on a 3 year tour. Have yet to find any pickers, but still looking!! Have a safe trip home.

If you ever make it to KMC, look me up and lets get together and pick. I used to fly through the Azores every couple of months. Great food.. very windy though!!

| Just got back home this evening and had a wonderful Christmas and a great weekend. I got to see the wife's and stayed a couple of nights with some friends. All of this would not be possible if it were not for the men and women of our military. I salute all our men and women, present and past. |

I am in my 19th year of Active Army Service. I am an MOS Guitar player for the Army. I play Steel as well.
I am in Recruiting now but still carry the Guitar MOS that I had as a Primary for 13 yrs.
