I was disappointed a bit.. Jeez When you have a guy like JD playing steel for you,he HAS to be heard!!.. They had him WAYY down in the mix,and you could barely hear the fills. Just a tiny taste of steel... I was a little put off by it, but thats the way ACL does a lot of big names.
VERY close to studio sound, never a little "soul" in the mix, kind of sterile. The great guitar playing of Vince was a little too reserved sounding .. Jeez old strats and teles through Matchless amps?? That should have been monsterous sounding considering Vinces FEROCIOUS chops!!!.. I dunno, maybe I'm too much of a purist when it comes to live music, but the sound was more digital studio than live concert to my ears. and you producers at ACL.. next time you get someone of JD's caliber behind the steel guitar on the show.. TURN IT UP!!...
A few years back I saw a Christian concert at a big forum venue and noticed the exact same thing.. soulless.. No amps on stage.. EVERTHING through the board and out the large sound system.. BORING!!! .. Very "canned" sound. A perfect studio sound in a concert hall..blech... am I off base here??? bob |

Bob, I feel the same as you. If you have a player, regardless of what inst. he plays, he should be heard. If not, eliminate the inst and save a salary. It is extremely sad to see a player as great as J. D. Maness down in the mix to where he cannot be heard. When we have to use sound people other than our own, the band leader talks to the people about getting the steel and lead guitar out front on solos and down a little for the fills. The road managers should take care of this problem with the venue on these acts such as Vince Gill, George Strait, etc. and eliminate the problem. Just my humble opinion. Jody. Jody.. I have a feeling its the way the shows are produced. I have seen MANY TV shows where the mix is robust, vibrant, and TRUE to what the musicians really sound like. Other times the onstage mix is condensed into a very processed, clean, sterile, sound thats just not"live" sounding...
I used to REALLY enjoy Austin City Limits, but more and more the last few years,I feel the music is "over produced" if that makes any sense. Man what I'd give to hear one string squeak or a half hit note. I crave reality in music, not sterile digitized "perfection"... bob |

I recorded the show through my carver 1000 and EQ'd Bose system through digital surround and it makes one big difference. However when I re-played the tape through my regular TV and no stereo system it is a terrible mix.
