I'm extremely new to Pedal steel, just purchased a S10DF Mullen (New) E-9th and started lessons with Steve Lamb. Great guy and has been a pleasure for the two times I've sat in with him. Thank God for his patience. I'm looking for Gospel Steel players in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area that I might be able to get with to receive some advice on Gospel Steel, any advice on players in this area? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks so much, Bobby. Can't get enough of this thing so far, I sit there until my bar hand and pick fingers start cramping!!!!! I hope the desire to master this instrument never fades away! I'm sure I'll be on here to bug you guys plenty, I'll just try to not wear out my welcome.

Thank you sir and I hope to ultimately belong to a gospel group. I've been out of church many years but working slowly on my return. I've only been in Saginaw for about two years now, so I don't really know anyone here, I work in Dallas and just drive here to get out of the main metroplex. I'm originally from Oklahoma. I love my Mullen so far, but being new to pedal steel I don't know what's good or bad yet! LOL! Thanks for your response. Bobby.

Man I could use all the help I can get, sometimes when I sit down at that Steel it just kinda feels like the parting waters just crashed in on me, so any help would be deeply appreciated, I just don't want to become a thorn in anyones side. Thanks, Bobby.

Hey Farris Currie,

Nothing like a little Brother support and lift me up, been out of the Church for some time now and it sure means a lot, almost forgot what that felt like. I hope God will allow me to lift him up with this instrument and just in my life for that matter. Thanks for any prayer that you could send up for me, and any help God can give me on this steel will definitely be appreciated because it seems it's gonna be a long journey,(Pleasurable) very long! Many Blessings!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bobby Dalton.

Bobby, I live up north of you about an hour or so in Gainesville on I35. I have played gospel music for years and still play at church. I am not playing with a group right now since gospel music does not go over very well in this city. My only drawback to playing in church is that so many churches today want the praise and worship music and a steel does not fit what they are looking for. I know a couple of players who no longer play churches simply because of how the music has changed and the mindset of some of the people. There are a few churches left where you can play and fit in. I play every song they play at church and struggle at times to make the steel fit in. There are some players who can play just about any style of music and make a steel fit simply because they are so talented. I understand Doug Jernigan plays in the praise and worship band and we all know he is an excellent musician. I like Southern Gospel and Christian Country and was even blessed to travel a little while with a gospel group. That was the most enjoyable job I ever had even though I had to play the licks that were on the records. Shoot me an email and hopefully we can get together sometime. I wish you much success and I hope you have as much fun playing the steel as I have.

Bobby, I forgot to mention a gentleman over in Keller that plays and works with churches. His name is Bill Simmons and he is a fantastic player as well as a first class individual. I do not know how busy Bill is but he is a person you must meet. He played and travelled with a gospel group for some time and he is pretty close to your area. Try to find his name here on the foru and shoot him an email and see what happens.

Hello Bobby and welcome to the Forum.I am a new member here on the forum and these are the greatest bunch of individuals I have stummbled upon in quite sometime.Glad to hear your testimony about coming back to church. The Bible has much to say about praising God with the instrument of ten strings,(Psalms 150:4)I often wonder if he had guys like us(Steel Guitarist)in mind when he spoke this command. Be encouraged Bobby and may God bless you to play skillfully as you grow closer to him.

Your brother in Christ

Del Ray,

I sure do appreciate your encouragment, but not to mislead anyone, I haven't come back to GOD yet. I'm trying to sort things out in my mind, although I do know that's why I need God, is to come back to him unclean for I can't get good to Get God! I have my doubts about our so called churches and the people that call themselves Christians, it's just that my heart aches to find that Church where God wants me and the people that glow with his Goodness! Yes, I know it's not an excuse for not being amongst God's people, obviously it's an excuse, but easier said than done to just run back to Church as if nothing wrong has transpired since I left him long ago. (Not looking for a Pity Party here so enough of that)

Pedal Steel has been on my mind for many years but now it's finally a reality. I have had a total of Five lessons. Two from Charlie Norris, where I also purchased my Mullen S10DF E-9TH. One from Reese Anderson and two from Steve Lamb where I've settled at. It's great joy and GREAT frustration at the same time. I don't really know anything, still learning how to sit behind the wheel!!!!!!!! Let alone drive this thing!!!!!!! LOL! It's looking to be a great journey and just maybe someday God can use me and this instrument for his Glory! I'm just hoping to be able to pick a Chord by Christmas time! LOL! Enough rambling, Many Blessings and all the Prayers you can send up for me is definitely NEEDED! Your Friend, Bobby Dalton.

Hey Bobby, great to hear you are on your way back to the Lord. I play at church whenever I can. Our church is still basic southern hymnals. I don't get to play there much as I am the main sound guy. I do have a Christian Country band though. I play steel and lead guitar for it and sing way more than I want to. Darvin Wilhite, a forum regular plays at a church in Austin. He sent a few CD's of the praise band there and his steeling is awesome. BTW, just a little uplifting humor from our pastor. It is not our job as Christians to clean 'em, it is our job to catch them, God will do the cleaning if we allow him to.
E-mail me if you would like.
God Bless and hang in there with the steel. Wayne Smith is in Rowlett and he is a great gospel player as well.

James

Thanks for the compliment James, I would be happy to send copies of those CD's to anyone who would like to hear that the steel DOES fit in with modern praise and worship music; at least in my opinion it does. Your opinion of my playing is questionable though (LOL), but I do jump right in there with the rest of the group.
