Johnny Gimble and his band "Texas Swing" are here in Eugene this weekend. Does anybody know if this band includes steel guitar, and if so, who it might be? |

Gimble's band without a steel player seems unimaginable, but when faced with long shots, either bet on them or don't bet, but don't bet against them! [This message was edited by James Cann on 08 December 2004 at 10:54 AM.] |

There sure aren't too many players that I would see without a steel player included....but Johnny Gimble certainly is one of them. Go and have a great time. |

I would prefer to see Johnny with a Steel Guitar in his band. I certainly wouldn't pass up a chance to go hear him and his band, even without a steel guitar.

In 1982 I took my son down from Santa Rosa to a NAMM show...Fender had a circus type tent set up on the lawn at the Disneyland Hotel...The entertainment was Johnny Gimble and Friends. (Maurice Anderson on steel)
About 3 hrs as I recall of GREAT music....
Whatever band he puts together will be worth seeing! |

Jack....I was just asked what year I played the show at Disney World with Johnny Gimble and did not know for sure....what a coincidence you would answer the question for me at the right time. I appreciate your remembering. |

Unless he has recently changed his line up Johhny's Texas Swing band doesn't use a steel in his band. Go along anyway. They don't make 'em like Mr Gimble anymore. |

Reece..I "HOPE" that I have got the year right, I believe that it was '82..after all
my years.... they all seem the same.
Loved the show...You guys pulled up on the stage a fella from Gibson (The name Tommy comes to mind.) handed him a Tele and asked if he could follow you guys...He looked at the Tele and said.."I thought you said you had a guitar for me to play?" then he proceeded to play harmonies to what you guys were doing....Awesome night that my 12 year old son, I and the late Kieth Allen got a real kick out of....Thanx! |

A very good friend of mine recently sent me a copy of the original Rose City Chimes by Bobby Garrett with none other than Johnny Gimble doing the mandolin solo that blew my socks off back in the 60's. What a giant of a musician he is and has been for longer then I can recall !!

I've had the pleasure of playing with Johnny once back in the '80's. What a great man....and he ain't a bad musician either!

Go see Johnie Gimble. Steel or not this guy just blows my socks off with his fiddle and guitar. There are masters of all instruments but only a few that are complete masters of more than one...Gimble is. Asleep at the Wheel albums among others really let him stretch out. I wonder what he'd do with a steel if he ever took a liking to it?
...don't usually gush, but Johnie Gimble is a rare talent.

When Johnny Gimble was here in Eugene the last time ( about three years ago ) Stacey Phillips sat in with his group on a borrowed
lap top. Johnnys brother from Sacramento was also with him and they did play a bunch of great western swing. It should be a fun evening.
