Good point Frank. And to think the only steel player to ever win an NEA National Heritage Fellowship (joining BB King, Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, John Lee Hooker, etc) has never been nominated to the Steel HOF.

As a new member of this GREAT and educational forum, I am not much on the nit pickin' that seems to be going on with this particular thread but I was wondering if there might be some way that we can get on a different track that relates bcak to the Pedal Steel Guitar? I find more enjoyment and learn so much more when topics of the Steel are posted. I think that I am ablke to learn something a little easier that way. Just my way of thinking folks, and I apologize if I am out of line.

I still think there's plenty of dudes who should be in the HOF before Julian.
Simply because I believe they should be, not because I believe Julian doesn't deserve to be in the HOF.

Some folks would like to see Julian in more than anyone else.
Some folks are taking that to the point where everything is a conspiracy against Julian.
Some people are dumb enough to fall in line behind them, seemingly without any thoughts of their own.

Keep those nominations coming boys, write something positive and keep submitting.
You're competing against the other nominations, possibly written by people who aren't jumping on the bandwagon of blame.

Sounds to me like its HOF Board house cleaning time......heck,even Strom Thurmond is finally out of office
Tom Bradshaw; Quit airing board business on this forum. Youre wasting our time and b0b's bandwidth. Lets get some new blood in there. Being that Herb Steiner is the newest member of the board,I say keep him and dump the rest.

Since credibility seems to be the issue here,
lets do a spot check on credentials as they pertain to board members......What are the criteria? How do you get nominated or elected to "The Board"? Can anyone be on "The Board"?
The answer to that last one is;probably not.

Sadly,"The Board" is starting to look like the US Supreme Court, wherein most of "The Board" members are probably envisioning a continuing comfortable tenure, much as the SC justices are. Get out old guys, and make way for the new!And if youre someone whos got an idea for a player whos not in the SGHOF but should be, I have two words for you: SONNY GARRISH.....! Name me one steel guitarist not now in the HOF who is more deserving of that honor and I'll redo your horn, free of charge.

Many other musicians besides steel players lurk on this forum. If youre someone whos wondering why the steel guitar is in a slump, you might take this to heart; most musicians dont take us or our instrument seriously because most of us cant get our heads removed from our backsides with regard to sense of history, tradition, loyalty and mutual cooperation with each other!
Guitar players watch us and laugh like crazy at the posturing, backbiting, ego driven self-promotion and lack of musical knowledge that figuratively hangs over us like a dull fog as the result of the actions of some of our misguided brethern who mistake the psg commmunity for a free page in the For Sale section of the local newspaper.
On that thread, lets look at fiddle players for a minute.... Ive played with maybe 20 different fiddlers this past year. Almost to a person, they all support and encourage each other and dont hesitate to offer a long list of names if asked for a referral. They also send the best sub they can on a gig. Not so with us. Its a well known secret that the "Nashville Way" is to never recommend a player to take your place who can sack your a$$ ....theres those "people skills" at work again, fueled by insecurity and greed, and Im sure its not just confined to Mucus City either. But you'll never see fiddlers doing that to each other. I only know of one fiddler who constantly bad mouths his peers and while he's a monster player,he's now relegated to slugging it out on weekends in a local skull orchard, playing with players who, except for the bass player, are far under this particular fellow's ability. Sad, but true... no one likes a whiner!
Who was it that once wrote:
"As a group, Steel Players are a picky bunch; pushy, demanding, perfectionistic, opinionated, etc, etc, etc..."""?? (excuse my paraphrasing) Perhaps its just "YOUR" influence on the players around you that make such an observation seem so???
Jeezus!! take a pill & chill TB!!!
Go seek out professional help or whatever... just shut the he** up!!
Was it R McDuffie who said "go practice" ?? I second that nomination

Sonny Garrish for the SGHOF in '05!!

I daresay that Chuck Campbell is unequalled as an ambassador of the steel guitar to the non-steel guitar world. I know that Robert Randolph has played to more people, but what other steel player has taken the pedal steel to a greater variety of audiences? Here's a small list of where CHuck has taken the steel guitar (up front and featured, not as a sideman):

Lincoln Center in NYC
The Miles Davis tribute concert in Symphony Space NYC
The San Francisco Jazz Festival
The World Sacred Music festival in Morocco (at the palace of His Majesty
King Muhammad VI of Morocco)
Kennedy Center in Washington
The Library of Congress
The Hollywood Bowl
and pretty much every major blues, world music, or heritage festival.

Plus the guy has taken the time to mentor just about every young Sacred Steel player out there (including Robert Randolph).

It's too bad the steel community doesn't know more about Chuck (and his equally talented younger brothers Phil and Darick).

I just had the pleasure of seeing and hearing Chuck, Darick, Phil and the Campbell Brothers band appearing here in Philly with the Derek Trucks band. Wow! What a great show these guys put on. But Chuck and Darick are awesome steel players. Absolutely top shelf.

I MOVE that we as membership of the Steel Guitar Forum seek ways and means to conduct a "CONFIDENCE/NO CONFIDENCE" vote in respect to the performance of Board of The Steel Guitar Hall OF Fame; and further that the results be made known to all parties concerned.

When the Campbell Brothers came to my town, they actually invited me and my friend Larry Jones to jam with them after the show. What a gracious band of awesome musicians! That was an experience I'll never forget.

Chuck Campbell is probably still too young to be in the Hall of Fame, but I have no doubt that someday he will be inducted.

Roy,
I think the only "CONFIDENCE/NO CONFIDENCE" vote that matters is attendance at the convention.

Just want to know:

"Who all" is on the HOF board?

"How" did they get there?

Can I or anyone else be a HOF "board member",if "no" then why not or is that decided between select few?

How long is their term?

Does the "personal life" of a "board member" come into play in being considered for the position of "board member?"

What "qualifies" them to be there?

Are they a "qualified musician" or just someone who has made their living off of musicians?

Why does a handful of board members decide who the steel guitar community honours?

And...what's to keep anyone from starting another "Hall of Fame" elsewhere and why not?

If the selection (or "none selection" as the case may be) of a Hall of Fame inductee is not favorable to you then "do not support the governing body of the Hall of Fame!"
In other words, just don't buy the products offered by those in charge. Hit them where it hurts, the money they make off of it.

Not throwing any stones here...just asking questions worth thinkin' about.

Enquiring minds want to know.

ADR (all due respect)to those deserving.
