I have some friends who are in a rock band called American Minor who are going to be in Los Angeles for most of December doing some recording. One of the guitar players, Buddy ( great name for a steel player ) is learning to play steel and is interested in seeing some of the local steel players. Buddy is an accomplished guitar player and I believe he will make a great steel player someday. Any input is welcome.

Hi Bob

There are a bunch of Fine steel players in town but as usual you need to call ahead and check with the clubs, try "Viva Fresh" in Burbank and you might hear Mike Johnstone or Doug Livingston who are both excellent also my ole steel teacher, John Mclung may be playing out with "White Lightning. There's a club called "The Cinema" on Sepulveda Blvd in Culver City which has country bands weekly. Sometimes Im playing but not this time of year cuz I've got family coming to stay for the holidays.

Cheers,

Monday, Dec. 6: The Cinema Bar, 3967 Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City, CA (310) 390-1328. Patty Booker's band will be playing with Gary Brandin on steel. Opening at 9:30 for her will be Lisa Finney, kind of in the jazz/swing/blues vein. Very nice.

Friday, Dec. 10: Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Blvd.(Just down the street from The Cinema.) Burrito Deluxe with Garth Hudson (The Band) and Sneaky Pete Kleinow (Flying Burrito Bros.)

And you can usually catch some steel playing at Viva Cantina in Burbank. Or check out the Doll Hut in Anaheim for their Sunday afternoon Country gigs. (Sometimes the Doll Hut's website is down; I think when they forget to pay their ISP bills...)

Hi Bob,

Small world!
I actually met Buddy at the last show my band played. He came up and introduced himself --nice fellow! I e-mailed him but I'm not sure how often he checks that address. My band plays again on Friday the 3rd at Spaceland in Silver Lake if he wants to come out. Hope he sticks with the steel!
