Topic: Great Steel Player on PBS Thanksgiving NIght! |

I just thought I would pass on a heads up. Be sure to tune into your local PBS television station on Thanksgiving night. There is an special SOUNDSTAGE show that is titled "George Jones - 50 years of Hits" It is a parade of stars that are tributing George Jones by singing his hits. IMHO the real stars are in the house band. Brent Mason, Stuart Duncan, Eddie Bayers, to name a few.
I am the audio designer, equipment supplier and live mixer for the SOUNDSTAGE series so I was thrilled to be at this performance and even more thrilled to get to mix the show.
The list of players wasn't available prior to the show so I didn't know for sure who would be sitting behind the steel guitar until the first rehearsal day when the band arrived. (although I had suspected who that might be)
Suffice to say that the steel guitar player was absolutely awesome and a wonderful surprise. I'll leave it at that and I hope you enjoy the show (with heavy attention being paid to the band) as much as I did.

I ended up with the Holiday PM shift on master control here at KLVX in Las Vegas where I work, so I'll be airing that program. Thanks for the heads-up, that'll give me something to look forward to on what otherwise might be a long and boring shift.

My TV listing doesn't list it for Thursday night, and http://www.pbs.org shows that Soundstage isn't viewing in the Dallas area for the next two weeks. Their search function won't show any more than that. Bummer! 
If anyone finds out when it will air in Dallas, please post it here. |

I know that Kris Wilkinson was the string arranger......She told me who played steel but I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but it seems that it was a player who has had a couple of hit records over the last couple of decades...

Tune in tonight. Although you'll have to wait until the second artist to find out because the first one up, Alan Jackson used his road band. There are actually two broadcasts, a "one hour" and a "two hour". One, the other or neither will be aired depending on the local PBS station's schedule.

Satellite won't work either if you have DISH network - could not find it listed on any of the channels there either.
Looks like us Texans are out of luck - Anyone find it on DIRECT-TV? |

Looks like you Texans may have to wait until a week from Tuesday. It's on at 8:30PM on KERA in Dallas on 12/7/04.

Thanks a bunch - will set it to record on my DVR - DISH did not even have it when I searched all channels!!

Thanks for the heads-up, Terry.
In case you all didn't know, T.C. was the steel player for the fabled "Jump 'N The Saddle Band" out of Chicago. The group had the mega-hit "The Curly Shuffle" a few years back & were always a tremedous live act. |

| There's no secret here, for anyone who wants to know and can't figure it out----the players list at the top of the post gets you most of the way there (Brent Mason, Stuart Duncan) and the photos on the Soundstage website confirm that we are talking about Mr. Paul Franklin. It'll be on next week in the NYC area. |

I've been watching it here at KLVX on the HD feed, on the 50" Plasma Monitor. Looked great. Unfortunately we are not airing it tonight on the analog PBS feed, so most folks here in Las Vegas will have to wait till next week to see it.
The show was wonderful, I just would have liked to hear more of Paul's playing.
Now I have to monitor an hour of "Antiques Roadshow".(Well, somebodys got to do it.)

I caught the show last night in South Florida. Wow! The show was great and Paul Franklin showed why he is one of the most respected players in the industry! Just incredibly tasty pickin! Don't miss this one when it shows in your area!

Yep, and after seeing this, any of you guys that think Paul's playing is sterile, eat your words.
He player commercial and PURE country on this show.
And besides I am glad to call him and the Franklin (Galbraith) family my friends.
What a Thanksgiving treat. I am about to order the 2 DVD set.

I've never seen any of the Nashville A-Team on TV before...this would be a first. But I can't seem to find when Soundstage will be broadcasting this particular show in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Hey T.C.!
That Soundstage show was great! Terrific job with the mix. (Leave it to a steel player to get it right.) Was the show done here in Chicago, or elsewhere?
I had my eyes and ears glued to the steel player all night, and I knew he looked familiar, but I couldn't think of who it was. I thought momentarily of "Franklin", but figured it couldn't be. I didn't find out the truth till the end credits.
I still remember you from your days with "Jump", and you may remember me as a "Jump Junkie." (mostly because of you) I still have the Emmons you sold me back in "82". It's having all kinds of mechanical problems, but I hate to give it up. I remember you sold Emmons, but played a Zum, why was that?
