Hello,I am a new pedal steel player and I live in central N.J. I feel like I might as well be on Mars when it comes to pedal steel, I have not found even 1 store that has any sheet music for steel, let alone an actual steelguitar. I have videos and some books I got online but I would like a few live lessons. ANY HELP would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brian

Brian if you go through some of the previous posts there was a listing of steel instructional sources. It was probably within the last two weeks. I live in Hillsborough which is about 10 miles north of Princeton. I have not taught in years but if you want to get together and pick a little we could do that.

Thanks Ben, I will email you, and thanks to all others that have emailed me. I am starting to feel a little less alone out here in the garden state with my pedal steel. Thanks,Brian

Brian, I'm right next door in Holmdel. I'd be more that happy to share some the bad habits that i've picked up over the years.

Brian,

If you sit face to face with Bob G. it will be like looking at a mirror image of your guitar since he is a lefty. That would be a good way to learn. I'm a lefty too, but all of my guitars are right handed and I play as a righty would. I found it disturbing to sit face to face with a right handed person when I took lessons as they moved in an opposite direction while playing. Anyhow, I live in Matawan and would be glad to help you with the rudiments. I'm in the phone book. In the next week or so I should have a second steel to use as well.

Thanks again to all that have responded, as it turns out, there are a few of us here in NJ ( by us I mean steel players and I really should not include myself yet) Has anyone ever tried to get informal steel club together in NJ I hope that does not seem corny. Thanks again, This Forum is awesome.Brian

I have a small business in Red Bank, it is a small music school, I have what we call an ensemble room, I always have equipment and a small project recording studio set up, we could met there, talk and play. I would have no problem getting a drummer and bass etc..... I am in several bands and I would play six string while all you real steel players play the steel. We could do it on various Sundays or mid afternoon Sat, or even after 7:30 on some week nights. It might be a good way for some of you steel players to network with some bands. Thanks,Brian

Wow!.. First of all we are all "real" steel players. To qualify all you have to do is love the instrument and commit yourself to learn the thing to some degree. I suggest for the first meeting we get together "with our rigs" ..set up in a circle.. throw on some tracks and just have some fun!.. get to know each other.. no pressure .. no competition to see who has the best licks..just a pleasant Sunday afernoon amongst fellow steel enthusiasts.
I'm free this Sunday.. and most weekends now that i'm without a gig
Any other local pickers interested?.. This could be the start of something good.

Hi Brian,
Hey, is Guitar Trader still in Red bank?
I bought a new Les Paul from them in '79 (lived in Cranford, NJ at the time).

Hi,We could do whatever you guys want to do the first couple times, play to tracks or with a band, If and when we do play live with other instruments I can assure everyone it would be very laid back, any drmmers, bass players etc.. that I would assemble for this type of thing would be very chill with no expections of what it should or should'nt be. In reply to PETE,GUITAR TRADER is no longer in business in Red Bank,They closed up shop in the mid 80's I believe. Red Bank is a very different town now from back than.I do miss the old gritty, seedy Red Bank though. Thanks, Brian

...the 17th is tentatively OK with me...my wife's father is in the hospital hanging onto life by a thread, and I've been staying home with the kids while she's there, so I can't say with certainty that I'd be there, but it would be my intent to be there if I can...

We can do the 17th and the 24th, so all can attend, or if all can come on the 24th lets go then. Even if 2 or 3 or even 1 person for that matter wants to get together on the 17th and all on the 24th. Whatever you guys think, If all who want to can give an answer as to the dates by maybe this friday that would be cool. Brian
