Well now that I got your attention... 
Just thought I'd mention I'm reading Jerry Jeff Walker's autobiography (available from his website) which is a fascinating book in itself... also contains many delightful drawings... and rare photos... including one of the Lost Gonzo Band from 1971/2.
And sitting behind the steel guitar... looking EXTREMELY cool... all in black... white hat... tinted glasses... Looonngg 1970s sideburns down to the jawline... slim... debonair... kind of looks like he's auditioning to play the Cisco Kid...
OK - you guessed it from the description... needs no introduction or further identification.
It's a great photo!

Well, of COURSE it's Herb Steiner!!
Incidentally, for all that he looks ultra-hip and cool, there does seem to be something on his face that says "Does anyone know which song we're playing...?", which, judging from the look of Jerry Jeff in the same photo, and many of the stories he tells, may well have been the case...

Don't get me wring. Herb is one of my oldest and dearest friends. But of all the adjectives that describe him, slim is NOT one of them. (It doesn't describe me either.) |

I'm gonna have to look that up. I didn't start hanging around with the Austin music bunch until 73 or so and first ran into Herb while he was with Alvin Crow. Ah, the pasture parties and getting busses stuck in the meadows.

Wow, I had no idea about this thread until a buddy of mine told me I was being discussed on it. I've been on the road with Pat James for the last three days (thanks Danny Sneed! PJ is fun to pick with ).
I have heard about Jerry's book but haven't seen a copy yet, so I don't what photos are being discussed. I think they might be from early '73, and might have been taken at Luckenbach or Kerrville TX.
Mike, since you seem to be the chronicler of my weight, add this to your database. Currently at 178, I'm 33 lbs overweight. At the time of my work with Jerry Jeff, I was between 135 and 145. Not "slim" perhaps, but low normal on the general scale of things. We weren't in contact in those days, so you didn't keep up on my physique. You would have envied me for my women, though!

Writing from memory, the photo caption says "1971 or 1972, Kerrville" - so Jerry Jeff wasn't too sure of the date either.
As for Mr Perlowin's cruel and unwarranted slur... - buy the book and see for yourself!

Nick, I'm used to it. Mike likes to bring up my paunch. It was the lead sentence in an article he wrote about me in Steel Guitar World about 6 years ago, though I really didn't know what it had to do with my steel playing or my career. I think doing so makes him feel less obese, even though he was around 250-275 last time we talked.

| Herb Steiner has played for sooooooo many of the legendary Texas bands and singers (Jerry Jeff Walker, Johnny Bush, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys, etc, etc) that his legacy may well be "Mr. Texas Steel"!! |

Wow Herb that is too dadblame cool! Can't believe you were playing for Jerry Jeff back then. Man I sat around on the banks of the Guadalupe River and had some real large times listening to Viva Tera Lingua!! I am seriously impressed Herb. Way to go man. I was blown away when I heard you play at the convention in Dallas a few years back but now I'm REALLY impressed!!

Wow, this old topic coming up again?!
Stu, Marvin Hagler still avoids me, though I'm perfectly willing to bury the hatchet with him.
BTW, Stu Schulman and I have been buds since the first time we met. He came to Austin with Wild Bill and the Buffalo Yankees, real early in the Austin "Progressive Country Scare," around 1973. A monster player and friend. We had a great time at the Sacred Steel jam at ISGC a few years back, blowing back and forth with Lonnie Bennett, Dan Tyack, Bruce Bouton, Bob Hoffnar, and ... yes... Frank Estes!
Rick, I get a lot of mileage from that ol' Viva Terlingua album though I'm really embarrassed by most of my playing on it. I did get a "Gold Album" for it, though. Even during the Michael Murphey and B.W. Stevenson era I just wasn't "there" yet (as if we're ever really "there",) and it took a few years with Alvin Crow in the mid-70's before I started feeling completely comfortable on the instrument.

Herb I think you did an outstanding job on that album. Gosh man we listened to it on 8 track till we wore it out and then bought another one. I spent that whole summer in Austin going from one street dance to another. Man those were the days. We treasured that Jerry Jeff album back in the day and I think its really awesome that you were playing on it. Talk about a trip down memory lane! Thanks for the good times Herb.
