Player looks to me like John McFee, a longtime member of the band. Plays guitar, steel and fiddle and does vocals too, according to the liner-notes of their "Farewell Tour"  livealbum from 1983 - one of those big, black vinyl things, remember ?

McFee is a great steel player, both live and on sessions. He was a member of the Doobies (replacing Skunk Baxter) and Southern Pacific, but more to the point, has had an amazing recording career. He has played steel (or dobro) on albums by Van Morrison (that was him on 'Wild Night', shortly after he took up the steel), Elvis Costello, Boz Scaggs, Huey Lewis, Steve Miller, (and Misress and Twiggy???). He also played guitar on many more albums. John is the guy who told me that he would have played pedal steel on a lot more songs, if he could have played it and done the rock and roll guitar thing (shake your rear, swing your long hair around). In his words, "the pedal steel is the ultimate rock and roll instrument".

I have an old Austin City Limits show featuring Southern Pacific. John plays some nice steel and some incredible guitar, but the amazing thing is the overall performance, absolutely glitchess, not a note missed, dropped, or out of place, every vocal line and Harmony spot on, and all played with great confidence and drive. Absolutley incredible musicianship. I don't recall ever seeing a live show more flawlessly performed.

Mark,
Are you familiar with the live album I mentioned above (The "Farewell Tour" album) ? It's just like you describe, absolutely flawless in every detail.
Of course a "live" album these days can be "doctored", but it certainly sounds live to me and it is an impressive album.

Now that I think of it, John was the first pedal steel player I ever saw live. It was 1972, and my dobro teacher snuck me in the Sweetwater in Mill Valley to see Clover. I was 16, and didn't look a day over 14. He was playing a single 10 Sho Bud (maybe a Maverick, but I think maybe a pro 1). Great stage presence!
