An earlier thread got me thinking about one of the first times I got close up and curious about pedal steel.

I was visiting a friend in grad school at univ of illinois in 1992 or 93 and he took me to the Rose Bowl. Saw a GREAT band. A singer in his 40s or 50s who looked very conservative but with a voice with shades of Willie.

The steel player was fantastic and very nice about answering my questions about the tunings and pedals and all that whatnot. I don't remember his name but I heard later that soon after he moved to Branson for a nice house gig.

It took me 10 more years to work up my nerve to tackle the steel guitar.
Anyway, thanks to the mystery man.
I wonder who this was and if the Rose Bowl still has traditional country.
Take care, all,
Bud

The singer you speak of may have been my good buddy Rich Mounce (announcer of SteelRadio.com).

He sang there for a long time (over ten yrs).

The steel player may have been Jerry "Muttonhead" Erickson. He plays guitar as well as steel. He is a fine, fine player and super person to boot.

I know there have been other players at the Rose Bowl in addition to Rich and Jerry...

Dyke Corson also played(plays)at the Rose Bowl.

Bobby Watson plays there now. He is a super picker as well.

That place is well equipped to offer inspiration ...especially if any of the forementioned pickers were there when you visited.

I am sure we will hear from one of these guys on this soon.. they are all forum members.....

The guy who moved to Branson was Donnie Markham, but he only played there When Sunny Norman was there (club Owner). Sunny passed away about 12 years ago. Rich replaced Sunny. Last I heard Donnie had quit playing and was in the resturant business. They were all monster players. I played there every Sunday and Tuesday for about 20+ years....

Yep...Dyke has it right...The steel player who moved to Branson was definitely Donnie Markham and a great player he is...The great singer was probably Jack Simpson...I went to work at the Rose Bowl and Jack was still singing...WOW...What a singer...I was playing guitar and steel...When he left I put together the band that was there for almost 12 years...We played four nights a week and Jerry "Muttonhead" Erickson was on steel guitar...I had to retire last Sep because of health problem and the band broke up...I live about two hours from Champaign now but went over there last Sat night...They still have a steel player but playing mostly the new top 40 stuff and some old 40's rock n roll....Hope this sheds some light on the Rose Bowl...

Dyke...That is right. We were working Wed through Sat and you guys were working Sun and Tue nights. Was a fun gig during that time. We all got along and was easy to just walk in and not have to be changing PA etc. After you guys left the band that took your place defintiely needed to have some PA classes...LOL...Oh for the good old times...

BTW...Dyke, looking forward to you and Tim Harr both playing our steel show in June of next year. Gonna be a good one!!
