Maurice Anderson, Randy Beavers, Bobbe Seymour and an audience full of star players on a double DVD recorded by a professional video crew on July 5th, is now for sale at Steel Guitar Nashville website.($24.90)
Want to hear and see great western swing and country tunes done the way the great jazzy swing players did them yesteryear? Do you like BeBop? Maurice and Randy were beyond incredible, don't you want to learn great things to play and see them applied to great songs in a jam session? How about just having this DVD just to enjoy watching forever as the milestone in steel guitar that it is.
This should be a collectors DVD and be more appreciated as time goes by. (Even though I'm in it!)

Did I say totally non-pedal? Randy and Maurice play 2 single 12 Superslides, I play a double 8. Randy and I use a Fender Steel King amp and Maurice plays a Peaver 112 with a Peavey effect, (of some kind).
Some tunes covered were "Once in a While", "Roly Poly" "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Night Life" "9 Pound Hammer", "Rose of San Antone" "No Tear Drops Tonight", "Secret Love," And a couple of Hank Garland Jazz tunes featuring Randy and a salute to Jerry Byrd, "Steelin' the Blues", to name a few.
The band was the famous "Time Jumpers" rhythm section, Rick Vanough and Dennis Crouch.
This was an expensive endevour to shoot, we are just trying to recoop our funds and make a lot of players happy that couldn't attend in person.
This effort is for you.

Bobbe, looking forward to it! Besides great pickers and tunes it will be the first chance for me to hear the the new Steel King, NV-112 and SS...hey wait a minute...you stock all that stuff...you rascal...I'll order mine on Friday!

I called SGN and talked to them and these are DVD-r's.....
Looks like I need to go buy a new DVD player that will play these types...(sounds like a good enough reason to me!!!!)

Bobbe....Glad to know you have the DVD's finished. It was an honor for me to be a part of it. It was a day I will always remember.
Playing with you, Randy, great backup musicians, and experiencing the positive attitude and enthusiasm of everyone there, made the entire event very special. I'm glad you filmed the show so those who could not attend can now enjoy "the moment".
I believe the DVD will clearly show the tradition and future of the non pedal steel guitar is secure. The enthusiastic non pedal players of today are preserving the history while insuring the future of non pedal steel guitar. |

I want to have Howardr make me a couple thousand "Slide Off" hats to give away for promo, but I'm afraid they'd keep "sliding off". Guess a chin strap would work..
I understand that "Howardr" IS THE hat man.
This "Slide Off" DVD seems to be "striking a chord" (so to speak) with many non-pedal steel players that have bought it in the past week.
This DVD proves that big chords and very fast notes can be played easily without the aid of mechanical devices (pedals and knee levers)and,Maurice has really shown that very little is forfited by shedding these mecanical devices with the exception of weight, size and complexity, we can all do with less of these things anyway.
Seems as thouigh a ten or twelve string single neck with some tasteful chromatics on the top and bottom can do about anything any player would ever want when it comes to BIG, DEEP chord playing.
How many times have you envied the jazz guitar player that just walks in to the job, sets his little amp down plugs it in, opens his case pulls out his gibson guitar and starts playing? Well, now I can too. Amp in one hand, guitar in the other. No Pack-seat. Don't need it because any chair will work with a lap steel. Yep, My playing is back where I started, a lap steel, a little amp. The difference now is, I know a lot more about what to do with it.
Lap steel? Man, yes, you bet.
Now, a question to all you nice players:
If I were to record a new CD seriously devoted to this nonpedal medium, what would you guys like to hear most, Country? Jazz standards? Island music? Classic Pop?
What type of backup music, big band? Classic bass and drums ala country? Same ala Jazz? Accoustic band? Let me know what you most would like, possibly a mix of some styles, I'm anxious to record something on the "Super Slides".

I don't know where people get that impression... 
Bobbe, I would suggest that you make a CD with all of the styles that you mentioned. It would have a wider appeal as there would be something for everybody (the shotgun approach). You would also sell more as opposed to just appealing to a small specialized group.

I ordered mine yesterday...as far as your next project, I too think that a varity would fit the bill. Since we are all students of the steel guitar and playing out, it may be interesting to add some vocal tracks and another lead instrument or two so that we could also study the interaction of the steel.

I hope that my photo didn't hijack this thread.
The photo was taken in 2003. Calvin & I had placed orders around the same time and when the guitars were shipped, there was a mix up.
I spoke with him on the phone and we laughed about it. He is a fine and humble gentleman.
I'll be ordering my Superslide DVD this week, and Bobbe, my credit is good.....I owe everybody!  |

You have my greatest respect in music, humor, and the hat biz.
One of the greatest reasons for anyone to buy this Double DVD is to study( steal) some of Maurice's great passages, licks, and chords.
Any one song on this Double DVD is worth its low price! The knowledge that can be gleaned from it is priceless. If you only learn one great lick from this Double DVD, it's worth the price. All this in addition to the entertainment value. Let's face it, just a part of what Randy Beavers played on it is worth the price by itself!!!

I'm looking forward to the arrival of the dvd. In my band, I'm involved in vocals-both lead and backup, dobro, lap steel, and some "regular" rhythm guitar. Because I have so many irons in the fire and never got past the novice stage on pedal steel, I feel like unless I really dedicated myself to PSG, and gave up some other stuff-I'll never do justice to the PSG. But on an instrument like a Superslide I feel like I'll be able to do a lot of different things and still be involved in the the areas I mentioned earlier-along with playing standing up. That is why I am so intrigued by hearing and seeing these top players on the Superslide.
