Who played steel on The Happy Goodmans
99/44 100% ?
Also I have an album by one time local favorites The Gospel Etters, recorded at Tri-State studios in Kingsport,Tenn, with house musicians. The steel player credited is Rick Hicks.Whoever this fellow is/was....He played some mighty tasty E9 licks.

Forumite Jerry Horner's brother, who died in an automobile accident several years ago, also played steel with the Happy Goodmans.

I never worked in the Goodman's band but I did about all of there recordings for the past 20 years.
I'm not sure about this particular recording because I don't know when it was cut. I can never remember the names of the songs I do without looking on the record or CD. "Age" I guess. Ha!!! |

John:
This album was recorded at Electric Arts Studio in 1976. It was produced by Rusty Goodman and engineered by Steve Chandler. Released on Canaan Label (CAS 9789).
Unfortunately, no musician credits listed.

Received the following from Lloyd Green. Should clear this matter up.
"Hello Graham,
Since there appears to be some confusion as to who played steel on that 1976 Happy Goodman album let me give you some specifics which I hope you will post.
My record session book for 1976 shows me recording for The Happy Goodman Family on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, March 29, 30 and 31, 1976. The producer
listed is Rusty Goodman. My book further shows all of the Nashville recording musicians, including Jimmy Capps (electric guit.) and Steve Chapman (rhythm guit.) and
myself meeting each of those days at Hilltop Studio in Nashville at 5:30 PM, and driving up to the Goodman's studio in Madisonville, Kentucky together in a van. Since it
seems unlikely there would have been more than this one Happy Goodman album released in the year 1976 there is a 99% certainty I am playing steel on it.
Further, my session book shows me again recording at their Madisonville, Ky. studio on Wednesday, December 29th, 1976, with Rusty Goodman again producing. This
was probably the first of a number of sessions for their next album to be released in 1977.
Warmest regards,
Lloyd Green"

John,
This record had some monster hits as I recall. Highlights are Rise and be healed,(wait til you see)My brand new home,I will sail up high, and Love like the Love of God. A great record with some great musicians all over the place. The Goodmans in thier prime, at a time when you could still find a Gospel Station on the F.M. dial. I was just a pup when this album came out,I remember my mom blasting this at our house like a kid would in thier car. Her motto was "Why should the devil have all the fun". Good Stuff.
LLoyd,
Thanks for clearing it up for me. I have been wondering for some time now. That sure is some mighty fine playing,I enjoy it.I "stold" this record from my parents Gospel collection, just so I could learn to "steel"

Dustin, I've known Ricky Hicks, the Steel Player you are refering to, since he was 6 years old. I used to play Steel for his Father and Mother, Bob and Gladys Hicks, at the Gem Theatre in Kingsport Tennessee for several years. Ricky was playing Bass Guitar at age 9 or 10. His older Brother Dennis, played drums. Ricky began learning Pedal Steel at around the age of 16 or so, if I remember correctly. He did some recording at Tri-State Studio during the time Bobby All, a very good Guitarist and arranger, was on the Staff and recording there. Ricky is now owner of The Ricky Hicks School of Music in Kingsport and Teaches students on several different instruments. He was a very good Steel Player and most certainly could have played those tasty E-9th licks.
Hope this info is of help to you. |

I played on a lot of albums with the Happy Goodman's through the 50's and early 60's. I really enjoyed the sessions with them. The group then were Rusty,Sam,Vestal and Howard.

Roger,
Thanks for the info. That album was recorded ca. early 1980's , and quite frankly is one of my most favorites. It's "real" country, and Ricky Hicks nailed the feel that was needed. If you talk to him, give him my thanks. And tell him to get on this here forum...
