I didn't get a whole lot of stuff at ISGC since I'm trying to sell more than buy lately, but I did get recommendations on two particular recordings, so I made a point to receive them.
Russ Hicks' "On the C Side" is a completely refreshing take on the 6th tuning that has too often been relegated to Benny Goodman-style Texas swing or Hawaiian music. Russ plays in a style that not only is extremely musical with awesome chops, but is also quite ambiguous as to what tuning he's playing. This in itself is totally great, IMHO. Additionally, Russ is a warm, friendly man, and these qualities come through his music.
He also plays magnificently on his wife Laney's new recording; though I didn't get one, I heard it and it has chops for days on it as well.
Like Russ' excursion into C6, Jeff did the same to the E9 tuning on "Once In A Lifetime." This album turned out to be his swan song. Again, this is a recording that shows what an inventive, soulful player Jeff was. Another reflection of the man's wonderful personality and approach to music. Driving from St. Louis to Columbia MO on Monday, a two-hour drive, I listened to the album three times consecutively. Not only would purchasing this CD help out Fran, but would be an important addition to anyone's music library. This is a very significant piece of music, in more ways than one.
