Look for the Jim and Jack Gage, they have a band that has a good steeler with them. Look for the Larry Keys Band, Little Joe Navarro's band or go to Jims in Clovis near Fresno. Jims was the hot spot back when I played around Fresno in the 70's. Paul Dobbs was a monster and worked with the Larry Keys band. This may be out dated info but they all may still be there. Terry Christopherson used to live in Madera, but last time I saw him he was living in Buckersfield and playing at the Crystal Palace. Hope you get to hear what you want. If not be sure to visit the Planes of Fame museum in Madera, the trip will not be a waste. Take care Michael.

Big Jim Baron lives in Madera. He would know who is playing and where. He's a regular member of the forum and a great steel player, too.

Bummer, I've played the last 6 months solid, but have most of September off. Back at it hard the first of October at the Big Fresno Fair. You wouldn't want to hear me play anyway. But seriously, go see Big Jim, his place is like Mecca for Central Cal PSG. He's got lots of toys and lots of stories. He would know where some of the other locals are playing.

I will say that there are NO obvious places to go. There are no clubs or honky tonks that feature country music in this area. I've played in exactly 2 different clubs in the last year, one in Bakersfield, another in Hanford. All my other gigs have been casuals.

Marty's doing a jazz thing I think, Jim would know.

[edit]

Bill I didn't read your post throughly. But update time: I haven't heard anything about the Gage Boys for a while, but that doesn't mean anything, Ask Jim. Larry Keys still plays, I think at little place called the Pub, but no steel that I'm aware of (and not much country the last time I heard them). Paul Dobbs is still around, still a monster, and still crazy as ever. I thought I heard Joe Navarro moved away, but I don't know. "Jim's Place" has been gone for several years, damn shame, one of the last great honky tonks. Played there for a while back in '99. Terry Kristopherson is in B-field at the Crystal Palace.

There's still several guys playing, I'm just the new kid.

Yeah, bummer that Fresno is all dried up. I used to make pretty good bucks playing steel and guitar for Jim and Jack Gage...5 nights a week and "parking lot" casuals during the weekend days. Then it all went away. Now we're luck to playing a few choice casuals per year. I guess it doesn't help with me living in Santa Maria now but I'd drop what ever I'm doing in a heartbeat to go pick with the "twins"!

I've used the slack time to shed my training pedals and built a really nice Fender Deluxe replica that I've been woodsheding on and playing in church for the last couple of years. Also pretty busy building new backing tracks for a steakhouse job over here...ya, I can hear the grumbling...but it seems to be the only way to play over here. Gigs are almost extinct as well as musicians the really want to play country music.

It'll turn around guys...it has before. Music is really cyclic. I remember when rick skaggs turned it around after the urban cowboy screwed it up for us. Who do you think will pull us out this time? "Oh Brother" shook a little ground...

Rumor has it that Skee-Ko's is going back country under new ownership. They closed down for a complete remodel, don't know if they're back now or not, this was pretty recent. Saw Pat a few weeks ago (at Jim's) and I though he said his new Zummy was a few months out yet.

Jim said Marty group is pretty hot. I haven't hear them.

Country is officially dead in Fresno/Clovis/Madera. Delpit is good, Porky's has been pretty happening for a while, played there a little bit with a group that was playing mostly NCS and classic rock with a great singer. Porky's is on Barstow by the way, Jimbo's is on Herndon up in Clovis.

Rock and Rodeo is trying to open a club in Fresno, Shaw and Blackstone area. Maybe if that happens and the Skee-Ko's rumor is true, we've got something. Cause right now, it sucks!!!
