DICKIE OVERBEY is one of my all-time heros.
I did here him play last night on steelradio with a singer(i don't know the name)with moste texas shuffles (i love that kind of music)
BUT the ARRANGEMENTS to back up the vocalist were so ONE-SIDED (only steel),
that i would asked where was the brilliant BOBBY CALDWELL (staff-leadguitar)(or his friend also brilliant BOBBY FLORES on fiddle),,,,,,,(?)
Belief it or NOT i love THE STEELGUITAR& DICKIE OVERBEY and SCOTTYS CONVENTION(s)

Jelle, the singer is Jake Hooker, a real nice guy that I have worked with a few times.  When I hear them play in Fort Worth, the lead duties are split a little more even. They were trying to showcase the steel, so I'm sure they picked songs that Dicky shines on. They are all great pickers and singers, so they had to pick and choose.
I would have liked to hear Dicky sing too, but it is a steel show, after all.  Bobby Flores is a great steel player too, in fact the old Emmons push-pull that Dicky plays used to belong to Bobby. |

Jim thanks for the reply, we are both fans of the two Jake&Dicky (i have a Jake Hooker CD+ Dicky on steel,,,, the other great one Bobby Flores did send it to me),,,,but the only thing is i like to here a complete ARRANGEMENT ,,,but that's my idea
However i love them ALL.

| I'd say the answer is "it depends." When Tom Brumley played from front to back on Together Again, that certainly wasn't too much. However, when I play more than just a couple of fills and a short break on any song the answer is YES YES YES!!!!! |

I find myself getting a little anxious for more steel with the 3:1 arrangement ratio (fiddle/guitar/piano : steel).
When it comes to steel instrumentals, I'd like to hear the steel player play a cool intro, the melody, an embellishment of the melody, 2 verses of total improv, melody with different embellishments, cool ending with triple tag.

I see your point, but, no, in it's not possible at the ISGC. There's a reason why the steel player sits front and center.
It should be noted that Bobby Flores had to catch a flight out before Dicky's set on Saturday and was not in the house. Bobby was on fiddle for the 1-3 AM show, Saturday morning.

| I had read about Bobby Flores on the forum & now that I have heard him live (& I bought his CD!) he can fiddle &/or sing for me any day! Just absolutely great western swing fiddle and vocals & harmony! |
