Bobby Black is a great player.....I was at the ISGC yesterday and was surprised to hear so many people say "who is he?" when he took the stage to perform. Boy, he had some great licks on those Commander Cody records.....
Best part of his show was the fact he was playing a non-pedal steel....and you would SWEAR he was playing a pedal steel. He was that good.
Congratulations to Bobby!!!

| My take away moment was when I walked into the Fulukewe (SP?) room an saw the little 12 year old boy who is blind just ripping the C neck and then jumping to the top neck and not missing a beat! This was an inspiration. |

Congratulations to all three great steel players!
But must say that I been a Bobby Black fan for nigh 30 years! The man always could pick! I love his steel recordings! He paid his dues and expressed himself creatively! We are all the richer for his steel artistry!

You ran into our Yuma boy Jonathan! That kid is simply amazing. He's going to be famous one day. He's only been playing for less than a year.
He also plays drums, and I believe I saw him tinkering at the keyboards too.

Last night he sat in with Johnny Cox on a universal and tore it up-a couple hours after doing the same on a D-10 in the Fulawka room. Amazing!

I know it was touch and go for a while, but; I'm glad you were able to attend and participate on the show! I'm sure you knocked them out! Congratulations on your induction to the SGHOF! I'm sorry I couldn't attend to witness this grand occasion. I really wanted to be there to finally meet you! Maybe, one of these days; it will happen!

It is REALLY GREAT to see people that really deserve it get inducted.
In addition to masterful playing, and half century long accomplishments, character does matter.

All three good choices. I am especially happy for my friend , Jody Carver.
Congratulations, Jody for finally getting into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. A well deserved Honor.....
It was the few early pioneers like Jody Carver and Speedy who popularized the Steel Guitar in the early years to give it that excitement we needed then.....al

| Jody was having some technical difficulties with his guitar at the show. I din't think a recording of that particular performance would do him justice. Buy his CD instead! |

I wish I could have heard more of Jody's set too-but the amount of time spent on stage tuning and the fact that he could barely be heard (in comparison to the other players volume) left me to returning back to the booth (Peterson) after his opening number  I realize this is the toughest audience for a steel player and perhaps Jody was nervous-I picked up his "Hot Club" CD (from Herbster) and enjoyed listening to it on the ride home though |

| I got to hear him up close and he was playing ever so soft but his technique was like no other I've heard on a non pedal guitar. He had some great stuff that he played so naturally as if he'd never left the guitar and great use of the volume pedal on his left foot. The guitar was a Fender triple neck I believe he said was a 1949 and incased in a box with wheels. The box was Fender tweed with the Fender logo on it like you would play in an orchestra. The thing looked showroon new. I got to sit and talk a little with him and this guy's all class whose probably forgot more than the non pedal players of today will ever know. You kept that secret pretty good there Jody. Congratulations! |
