Here's a Collection of Signs that we came up with some time ago.
I always like to represent myself as one proudly.
There are many forms of hackdom.
I think Player is the operative word.
Gotta run.

I believe a "hack player" to be someone who spends more of their time bragging about how "they are a pedal steel player", than actually learning to BE a steel player. I personally know more than one party who fits this description. Bobby Lee's comments in the other post especially rang true. One particular person I know has been "playing steel" for over five years and still has the tuning chart and string names written on a piece of masking tape stuck to the guitar,(and needs to refer to them every time they set up!). Playing skill notwithstanding, I feel if you do not have sufficient interest in the instrument to at least learn the rudiments, or are more concerned with being seen sitting behind one because it looks cool than actually trying to advance your playing skills, you are indeed a hack in my book. |

I think, that after re reading my string of "You Might Be a Hack If..", I've come to a conclusion:
The label "Hack Player" is something you only want to refer to yourself as, in a self effacing way, or toward eachother if you've known each other an appropriate number of years.
A distant relative to how african americans sometimes use the dreaded "N" word in referring to themselves or others in supreme familiarity and humorous comraderie.
I notice "Top Shelfers" don't refer to less evolved players as "hacks".
Whenever referring to less evolved players as hacks, it really begs the question. "So exactly what makes you 'God's Gift to our Craft'?".
After all, "The Man" doesn't say who "The Man" is. Everybody knows.

I'm a hack as far as I'm concerned.
Maybe after another three thousand or so live paid gigs and another quarter century, I'll look down my nose at other players.....
I hope not.

Most people would consider a "hack" as one who isn't really proficient. I guess I've even thought of it that way, and considered myself a "hacker". However, the true definition of a "hack" is not this at all. Webster's Unabridged Dictionary says this...
Quote: |
hack - A professional who renounces or surrenders individual independence, integrity, belief, etc., in return for money or other reward in the performance of a task normally thought of as involving a strong personal commitment... |
It also says this...
Quote: |
a person, as an artist or writer, who exploits, for money, his creative ability or training in the production of dull, unimaginative, and trite work; one who produces banal and mediocre work in the hope of gaining commercial success... |
Well! That kinda puts an entirely different light on things now, doesn't it? Perhaps, I'm not a "hack" after all? And perhaps, a good number of very talented professional singers, writers, and musicians are.
At least, that's what Mr. Webster's book says.
