I just got a CD called Detroit in the 50's V4.
It's a collection of rare rockabilly put together by a Dutch company. There is a cut on there called Steel Wool by Chuck Hatfield. I can't find any info more about him. Anybody know anything? Sounds like he's playing C6 8st. Kind of a Speedy West sound. Very energetic. Lots of C6 on this album, but this is the only cut by Mr. Hatfield. I can't find any indication that he recorded anything else under this name.

Paul,

Chuck Hatfield played with the O K Ranch Boys in the 1940's. He was known for excellent steel guitar playing. After leaving them he went to Texas. I think that he primarily played with various groups but did little recording.

He was a product of the Honolulu Conservatory of Music in Flint, Michigan and was taught by Russ Waters.

Not much here, but information is sparse.

Aloha,
Don

Paul, there was a thread on Chuck Hatfield last year.
I don't know how to do a link to another forum thread, but if you search "Chuck Hatfield" under "Steel Players" you will find it.
Chuck was on many of the country records made by Fortune Records in Detroit.
As Fortune was mainly an R&B label there wasn't a whole lot of country.
From what I gather, Chuck got the call when they needed a steel player.

Got it. That's perfect. Thank you very much.
I am a brand new fan of Mr. Hatfield's. What a great player!

I love that cut, and all the material on the Detroit In The Fifties series from Collector Records . I took the one volume in to work where our shop carpenter is listed as playing piano on the track by local Bluegrass man Bob White all those years ago and he was really surprised to say the least. As Paul mentioned there is some cool zingy Stringmaster C6 sounds on these. One volume cover shows a honky tonk band playing at the long defunct Cadillac Club stage here in town back in the day
