What is the best type of tuner you would use for a homebuilt lap steel, not console, eight string? Waverly makes a really nice looking one that has engraving on the tuners, listed in the heading for an acoustic so I don't know if these would work on a lap steel. Looking for good quality and appearance.

Don't know if they're the best, but they are good quality, I use 'em myself, and are a heck of a lot cheaper than Waverly's: Gotoh. You could buy four 6-string sets that would be enough for three 8-string laps, or just go here and order a set and a couple of loose ones: Gotoh Tuners on Stewart-MacDonald's web site.

I highly recommend Allparts or secondly Stewart McDonalds. If you are a Dealer you can get substantial discount at Allparts. If you know a vintage Dealer / Shop, ...then they are likely to have an Allparts account. I try my best to buy American (but not Amairkan nazis) when I can; But I don't run anybody's show, so..........
There's also a Chinese gentleman in Taiwan who exports musical instruments and parts to the USA. His inventory includes ALLOT of different kinds of very affordable quality tuners (currently $15 a set B.I.N. + $7 s/h). A respected & popular USA Steel maker uses his tuners, or at least did a number of months ago (I don't know if I should be at liberty to state the Steel maker, so I won't). The Chinese gentleman's name is Sam Lu Liang Shan. His commo and service has been professional (to me, as of last year). His ebay account name is taisamlu . His email address in August 2003 was taisamlu2002@yahoo.com.tw . You could also email him through his ebay AUCTIONS pages by clicking on "Ask Seller a Question".

Thanks Mike and Denny. I've been looking at the Stewart McDonald site and I have their catalogue that was just sent to me. I'll be starting on the wood and cutting it out this coming week. Won't do much else until I get the tuners and pickup (going to use a horseshoe from Jason's website). Can't wait to post the finished product.

I bought two sets of the golden brown high class tuners from the Chinese gentleman for an archtop 12 string I was making.
They are gorgeous- top quality with a great feel.
I can reccommend them highly.

yes. I use the tuners from Stewmac. you have a nice selection on tuner heads.
the Waverlys are gorgeous, but those are for lighter acoustics.
