| A friend who recently attended a Brad Paisley concert in Cedar Rapids said the steel player was from Clear Lake, Iowa. Can anyone fill me in regarding the name of the steel player? ...Lefty |

I received additional info in a email from John Olynyk and below is part of that email:

Randle is from Sturgeon Lake Sask. not Calgary.. He started playing steel at age 13 approx. He bought his first steel from me , a blonde LDG, which his dad plays now, & his dad & mom still live in Sturgeon

Hi Gang
Randle was born in Calagary Alberta and we moved to the Shellbrook area of Saskatchewan in the spring of79 and he was just days from 2 years old.
As John said he got his first steel when he was 13 and I do have it here.
He started playing with Martina McBride when he was 19, from there he went with Bryan White and now Brad. |

That's a running gag with Brad, intoducing the band as local boys.
I saw their excellent show last night in Orono, Ontario, Canada. Each band member was introduced as being from a diffeent Canadian city. The truth is only Randal is Canadian. We had a nice visit after the show.

I'll vouch for that. Brad introduced Randle as being from Atlanta when I saw them last winter. I had a chuckle.

If you want to hear an absolutely brilliant C6th solo and ending, have a listen to Brad's "You Have That Effect On Me" on his Part 2 album. It will just knock you out. Mike Johnson takes the steel honours on this track, and it is almost Chalker-like. Big chords, rapid single note delivery and an absolutely wonderful arpeggio ending. Classic C6th work by a very underated player.

A little history on that Franklin D-10. It was originally owned by Donnie LaValley who used to play with Reba. At the time I purchased a S-10 Franklin and needed a double neck. Donnie was thinking about scaling down to a single neck, so we traded guitars. I used that guitar on the road with Paulette Carlson, Larry Stewart, and Bryan White. I later bought a Zum and sold the guitar to Randle who took it back to Bryan's band. I have owned 3 Franklins and this was the best sounding one of the bunch. Really good guitar. It is good to see that it is still out there in lights. Hahahaaa!!!

Randle is a hell of a great steel player. I play with Terri Clark, and we did some Brad Paisley shows last week. Brad is good about letting his guys play. I can't think of a Nashville singer that allows so much fiddle and steel jamming.

Brad is a West Virginian and he know how to play himself....not just open his mouth and holler like the rest. He aprediates good pickers no matter where they are from, and lets them show theit stuff. That makes him a better person and entertainer..He aint stupid like some I have seen and worked with..... Sincerly, jennings

I didn't realize Brad could pick guitar like he does! man, He can"tear-it-up"!

I'm glad Keith showed up in the thread. Otherwise, we might have only known that Brad's steel player was some Canadian guy named Randle who's been playing steel for awhile and may have had another high profile gig or two before joining Brad.
I met Randle at Chubby Howard's show a few years ago. He's a real unassuming guy, puts on a great show and is a pleasure to talk with.

| I just caught the Brad Paisely show last Saturday night at the Delaware County Fair in Walton, NY. Randle does a fine job on the steel and keeps up well with the rest of the super pickers in the band. Wish he was a little more up in the mix... The one song I really heard some nice steel in was "The Dad He Didn't Have To Be." I appreciate Brad for being traditional enough to still carry a steel player and to let him be heard.
