Jussi.......and other knowledgeable historians....Would it be possible to determine directly from the Manufacturers of steel guitars, how many units of the various makes & models were actually made and sold? I'd imagine that there were fewer made/sold than we might otherwise think. What say you?

I don't know about that but I had a new Zum built for me and got it in May of 2002. I just had another one built for me and got it this past week (one is not enough, I guess). Both are S-12 guitars. I compared serial numbers on them. Both are designated S-12 and then the number. The new one is 91 guitars newer than the other. I would assume that means 91 S-12s were built in 27 months, or is that 91 total guitars? I have to ask Bruce about this. Ron

Serial numbers can be misleading. Often they're not "serial" at all - they can contain dates and other encoded information. There's no universal logic to them.

Few manufacturers release production information. If the numbers are low, it's never in their best interest to broadcast that fact. Even if the numbers are high by steel guitar standards, they probably look dismal to the outside world.

Hey folks,

I think I remember hearing a few months ago that MSA (in the 70's) sold more Steel Guitars than ALL the other manufacturers combined.

I think at that time MSA was being distributed by another company...like Gibson or something like that. I'm not sure...Reece could tell us exactly.

Billy-MSA was at one time being distributed by Chicago Musical Instrument co.
