I go to school in Long Island and I will be there from Sept-May. I was wondering if anyone in the area can help me in any way with finding a country band that needs a steel player.

You can try the Pedal Steel Guitar Association. I think they're www.psga.org or something like that. Bob Maikle should be able to help....JH

The best thing to do around the city is to go out to clubs and shows where steel players are playing. Get your name around a bit. If you can play you will be as busy as you want.

If those of you contact Bob Maickle I am certain Bob will suggest you get a chance to listen to a GREAT group of musicians.
Jeff DiMaio is a great steel player as well as a good singer. He and a lead man by the name of Tyler I belive do some of the best twin picking I have ever heard..they are truly a treat to listen to. Their band is tight and well rehearsed and to add to that they are fine guys...you can hear Jeff's and the boys at www.swinginwest.com every Friday from 1 PM till 4 PM eastern daylight savings time..
The group is "Gunsmoke" and boy do they SMOKE
Try it you'll dig it. edited I gave Mike an extra hour his show is as above 1 pm till 4 pm every Friday eastern time.
Scott you are most welcome. [This message was edited by Jody Carver on 13 August 2004 at 05:46 AM.] |

Scott, I actually saw you guys a few weeks ago when you played in Huntington Center on the green. I was planning on coming up after the show to talk to you guys but I had to leave early. But what I saw I liked, you guys pick the right songs to play.

Check the schedule at the Rodeo Bar NYC. If the Western Caravan is playing, come and bring your picks. Good players are always welcome to sit in. JW |

Long Island is a very large place and there's tons of bars and bands.
Where are you going to school?
Also, don't limit yourself to just country. As Bob said, you can be as busy as you want, and you don't have to trek into the city either.[This message was edited by HowardR on 15 August 2004 at 10:14 AM.] |

John,
I actually own the Emmons S-10 that you used to have. Bought it from Jon Gregg and thats what I'm working with right now.
Howard,
I go to Hofstra which is in Hempstead so thats why I would go to the city if I had to, its about 20 min away.

Joe, you've got all of Nassau & Suffolk county at your disposal as well as NY, Brooklyn, & Queens.
20 minutes from Hempstead to NY?....by helicopter maybe, but not by car or train. You'll show up late for your gigs.

Howard,
Yeah, I might of exaggerated a little with that 20 minutes away thing... But I'll go to whatever borough that will take a chance on a new steel player.

I loved that little Emmons...recorded much of Western Caravan's "Yellow Texas Moon" with that guitar, and I know I did bunch of jingles with it. Wish I had it back...I think it was a 71 ish... |

Joe-
So it was you who snagged that Emmons! Dang, I was a day late on that one. In the end it worked out. I bought Howard's.
There sure is something highly incestuous about the steel community, isn't there?
Best of luck finding a gig!

Yeah, I snagged it. I have quite the story for the day I bought it also. I spent basically all the money I had on it and then got my car towed, which costed me 300$ more dollars that I didn't have. But it sure is a great guitar.
