Does anybody know who was the steeler that played with Faron Young?I have asked people overhere in The Netherlands and no one seems to know who that was.
Maybe that one of you could help me out on this one.

Hi Ron, It depends what time period you are talking about. Doug Jernigan played on the road with Faron in the early 1970s.

I always wanted to know who played that great non-pedal stuff in the 50's by Faron. One in particular was "Tattle Tail Tears". Have a good 'un, JH

One of the greatest steelers of all time played with Faron also, I believe that was Jimmie Crawford (one heck-uv-a picker). I always idolized Jimmie. |

I believe that Jimmie Crawford played steel for Faron on the road in the early to mid-sixties. If memory serves me right , it was Jimmie that recorded: "I Just Came To Get My Baby Out Of Here" with Faron. He told me once that he was immulating on pedal steel, the licks a honky tonk piano would have done. Very creative and effective!

I can shed a little light on this. Faron and I both grew up in Sheveport. He lived just about 1/4 mile from me and we knew each other ( although we went to different high schools) He was a few years ahead of me.
At the time I was playing with a teenage group (I played a Fender D8 Pro -- C6 and Emajor) and our lead guitar player was non other than James Burton. We played behind Faron at quite a few local venues. He later got aquainted with Webb Peirce ( who was working at Sears and living in my grandmother's rooming house.) Webb was starting to book some pretty good gigs and he had Jimmy Day and Floyd Cramer playing for him on the Hayride, and Faron "graduated up" to their band.
So, I'm pretty sure that Jimmy was the one who played on his earliest recordings. Another good steel player who played on the Hayride at that time was Felton Pruett and I know he did some gigs with Faron, but I think Jimmy did most of his work after Faron got on the Hayride and for several years.

Reading these posts brings back some memories--I saw Faron in Oskaloosa, Ia. in 1971 and Skip Jackson was playing with him then. Wonder if he's still alive and able to get around and take nourishment ?? |

RE:Skip Jackson
Skip has a very successful photo studio now. If you'll check John Hughey's last few CD's,you see that Skip took the pics on 'em.
RE:Jimmy Day
Gentlemen,I hate to "bust your bubbles",but I don't think Jimmy played steel on Faron's earlier records. It was, either,Bob Foster,or Joe Vincent. Just spoke w/ Joe,& he told me that,"Goin' Steady","Tattle-tale Tears",etc. was done while Faron was still in the army. He used studio pickers back then, one of which was Bob Foster. Joe's 1st session w/ Faron was,"I've got five Dollars & its Sat. Night". Bob also played w/ Cowboy Copas,Hawkshaw Hawkins,& Jean Shepard.
So,there ya go,right from the "horse's mouth". (not me,i'm on the other end. just figure i'd beat someone to it.)

Well, I know for sure that all of Faron Young's later recordings were played on by none other than the Great Lloyd Green and I must say they were some of my favorite steel guitar tracks.

The Big E played on some of Faron's recordings like" Everytime I'm Kissing You' I think of you Kissing Him." Garrett and I wrecked our guitars trying to find Buddy's new lick on the song on E9th. We find out later he did the lick on C6th. Jody. |

Smiley,
Acc. to the session information included in the Faron Young-box set on bear Family Records (includes the complete Capitol Recordings) it was Jimmy Day playing on the 1st and 2nd session w/Faron on March 1, 1952 and May 21, 1952. The next session on October 12, 1952 was already played by Bob Foster. Don't know if they are correct, though!
Kind Regards, Walter

In November of 1959 Faron headlined a show at the high school auditorium in Porterville California. He also had Skeeter Davis and June Carter with him. Playing bass was Donnie Young (Johnnie Paycheck) and playing the First Sho-Bud I had ever seen in person was a handsome Big Ben Keith. It was also the first Grand Ole Opry show to come to our little corner of the West. |

Didn't the Honorable Sir Bobbe Seymour pick for Faron sometime in the '60's or '70's?

Has to be BE on one of em, Faron told me about he was sort of complaining about wanting something new for the intro to "Sweet dreams" he and BE were arguing about it, finally BE said "Why don't you hum what you want?" He did, and there you have it; the intro to sweet dreams. If you are young, you may not realize it but in those days, every one at a recording session was a wise A## |

Hi Jim, You are so right. I had to separate Bobby Garrett and a singer at a session as the argument got out of hand. At this paticular session I was playing bass. Jody. |

Let me see how good my memory is. I started with Faron at the end of 1972 playing lead guitar, I took over from Odell Martin who had moved on with Donna Fargo, Skip jackson was playing steel. Here's where it gets fuzzy. Hank Corwin was with the band for a short time if my memory is correct, then Al Lewis for several years followed by Cal Sharp for many yrs, Stu Basore folowed Cal on steel until Faron called it quits. There were 1 or 2 others but they were only with the band a short time and I can't remember their names. Too much fun back then if you know what I mean. I hope this helps. Richard |

Your right Mike but that was before I started with the band. While I'm thinking of it I believe BE played on all the Step One recordings that Faron did. I know he was on all the ones that I worked on.
