i can pick the other string groups ok ie..865 543 but i have the dickens of a time with the unnatural hand position for strings 10 8 6.... any suggestions ??

Joe Wright has a fantastic method for the right hand . If you practice it you will get better.

When the time for that grip comes in the tune, just look at your thumb & fingers, line them up with the strings, pick the grip, then try to catch up with the rest of the band...

All you need to do is practice, practice, practice. The 6 8 & 10 string grip is very important for chordal melody.
