Hi All,
Just a big hello from a new member in Perth, Western Australia. I've only been playing steel guitar for a few years, though I've been listening to the likes of Speedy West, Joaquin Pheonix and such since I was a teenager. I'm actually a bass player by trade, but finally succumbed to my love for all things steel. I was also lucky enough to play bass in a band with Lucky Oceans for 7 or 8 years here in Perth, so I guess standing behind a master for 3 nights a week for that long must have finally rubbed off and inspried me to try and learn this instrument.
I look forward to getting to know you all!
Take care,
Ben Franz |

Speedy West is one of my heroes, too, but I didn't know Joaquin Phoenix played steel. Pretty good actor though .
I know you must have meant Joaquin Murphy, just kidding with you. You are very lucky indeed (pun intended) to have had such close proximity to Mr. Oceans. Welcome to the SGF! |

Welcome Benjamin, I made a couple of trips to your neck of the woods in the early '90's. One of the trips lasted two months, so I began to feel like a local. The people at the Burswood hotel knew me by my first name. I spent about 3 weeks in the country, out around Narembeen. I even made the ferry trip out to Rottnest Island and saw the Quokas. I enjoyed my time there and made a lot of friends. I never got used to driving on the wrong side of the road though.
I didn't hear any steel while I was there, but I did find a music store that I visited a couple of times.

Welcome to the forum sir. Being on stage with the great Lucky Oceans for so long will do nothing but help your playing! Going to Australia is on my list of places to go one day. Reminds me of Texas!

Gaday mate! I spent a couple of weeks in your fine country a few years back. I was in Adelaide on business and now wish I'd take more time to tour about. I was young and foolish then and also anxious to get back home to my family. Not that that is foolish in and of itself, but to go that far and hurry home...
I hope you have great time with this wonderful instrument. Like many here, I don't depend on the steel for a dime of my income, but there are many great pros here to learn from.
