When you play steelguitar you have a lot of spare time on stage during verses, guitar solos so on, but what you do then? Play backup, tune, smile at the ladies, drink beer?

I never drink beer on stage, but I tune the ladies and smile at the backup!

Frown at the drummer, who's playing too loud.

(Wait, that should be loudly, an adverb.)

Usually I check the setlist for the next song coming up, so I can make necessary preparations. Sometimes, I'll follow the chord progression silently with the volume pedal off, so I look like I'm doing something besides just sitting there (this drives sound men crazy!).

Otherwise, I enjoy audience watching as a hobby. Remember to smile and nod when you make eye contact.

Or in the case of Bill Monroe... When he got up to do his thing, he looked at me and told me I could just get off the stage !!!

Interesting thread- on gigs with a big "country" band, I'll lay out more, but for most of my gigs the steel is filling the role of kind of a keyboard/saxophone combination, and I'll comp behind other instruments and vocals, play lines with/around other section players etc. I've always looked at steel as another instrument in the band, there to support and color the music, rather than a specialty noise that just drops in here and there...

I will sometimes practice scales and licks with the volume off. I try to do it discreetly. Other times I'll just spin the bar in my fingers and check out the crowd.

I'm playing with folks who have a fiddle player who sings most of the time, so can't do leads much, and no electric guitar.

They pretty much have told me not to lay out... which is interesting, trying to find a relaxed pad kind of thing... on those moments where there's breathing room, I'll typically play beer, smile at my tuner, and drink ladies.

Sinner that I am, I would smoke if I could when the pauses came, but that's not allowed here anymore.

I've never had the luxury of working in a band that had enough pickers so I could do nothing between solos.

I pull out my blackberry and check my email. Then, if there's still another chorus to go, I might call my mom on my cellphone, just to see how she's doing...

Smile nice and big toward the artist... maybe dance around a little on my pack-a-seat until the guitar tech falls over laughing...
