Hello All,

My name is Ray Gehringer and I'm new to the forum and very happy to be a member. I've been browsing the forum for a couple months and gathering PSG information and have to say I enjoy it a great deal. I play six string guitar and six string lap steel, I have a 193? Epi with a Ric/Horse Shoe style pickup. For the past 4 or 5 months I have developed a case of PSG fever though. I'm set on getting and learning PSG. In the process of getting the dough together to get a pro model S10.
I have a question and I hope it's in the correct section of the forum, here goes. Would it be worth my while to tune my lap steel in some type of abreviated E9th tuning and practice with it for the time being? Any other tips for prep work that may be usefull while I'm waiting to get my PSG?

Regards,
Ray

Welcome to our little corner of the World Ray. As you may have already figured out, there is a lot of good folks, and a wealth of knowledge here.

I guess you could experiment with the tuning of the lap steel. Since you are already a lap player and musician, you should pick up the PSG very quickly.

Good luck,
Mark

Thanks for the reply Mark. Although I play lap steel I tune to open A or G and at that I play mostly Blues and Allmans type stuff, and a very little bit of country swing. I thought maybe if there was a scaled down six string E9 tuning maybe I could at least work on right hand technique.

Thanks Again,
Ray

Welcome, Ray. If you are near Philly, we have a very small country jam at the Mermaind Inn the first Tuesday of evey month. I'm playing a gig there this Friday with a group that does some old jazz and country standards, mostly ballads.

You could get a feel for the strings and frets of E9 by tuning (bottom to top) B,E,G#,B,E,G#. I don't think you need or have room for the 9th and other chromatic strings on a six-string. But you might also try an E7 tuning: B,D,E,G#,B,E, or an E9 tuning: B,E,F#,G#,B,E. Alternatively, you might focus on what is called the AB pedal-down position, which many players spend more time at than the open position. This is an A6 tuning and you could try E,A,C#,E,F#,A. This is more useful for both country and swing.

If you already play some country swing, you should seriously consider paying a few more bucks to get a D10 or Universal that will allow you to play the traditional swing 6th neck. To try that on a 6-string tune to G,C,E,G,A,C, or A,C,E,G,A,C, or C,E,G,A,C,E. For a single no-pedal neck, C6 is probably a more useful swing and country neck than any of the E tunings above. It was the standard before pedal steel came along.

Ray, When you post a question on the forum expect a 100 different opinions.Heres mine.C 6th is by far the best 6 string tuning because you can get the most with the least. Bar straight Majors and minors.Slanted bar you have Dim,Aug,Ninth,7th,also substitute chords. Good luck

Richard and everyone thanks for the tips. I'll tune my Epi up to C6 and noodle around with it.
LeRoy - Thanks for the replies!
