I meant Steve Palousek, not Gary Carpenter.

Steve's look like nylon, like the blue Hercos, but I seem to recall him having red ones and black ones. I picked up a red Herco-looking one a year or so ago, but am not sure if that's what Steve is using or not.

So basically, I don't know.

Yes Gary uses the Bug-a-Blues, or at least he has forever. Of course he could use a Fender medium duct taped to his thumb and outplay anyone

Well, it appears that mine are the Flex 52’s. It looks like Palousek’s picks on the video appear to have a longer with a thinner shank that reaches into the strings deeper.

Anybody have a picture of those Herco Bugga Blue picks?

I've told Gary he should make a DVD. You think there'd be interest if he sold it on the forum? His playing is so awesome and too few guys sing his praises.

Hey Gary Carpenter is a WONDERFUL teacher and explains things sooooo well. He would do a wonderful DVD if someone can talk him into it..??ha....and set it up for him and they would do well to help him get it going.
For folks just to see Gary's technique is worth the price of the DVD alone; then they can also learn how he does that so effortlessly and would be the best learning experience they could ever hope for.

I don't know Ricky. I've watched him up close for many years and many lessons and I still come out shaking my head mumbling "how can he do that?"

WEll Chris we all shake our head at Carps playing; but something really good wore off on you and that is your right hand. Chris your right hand position looks more like Carps than anyone else I've ever seen except Buddy Emmons..ha.
So you have the right tool; so use it..ha.... oh and I forgot to mention that you have to practice 14 hours a day EVERY DAY..ha

Ricky nailed the prictice thing on the head. Back in the 80's, when Carp was still advertising in the classifieds for a gig, it didn't matter what time of day you called him, he was sitting at his steel. Can't tell you how many times I'd call about something, and he'd say "man, listen to what I just found on the E9th..." and so on. I'm sure you and Chris remember that stuff, as well as other stories. The guy is an absolute monster...period! If you could get him to sit still long enough, it would be a heck of a DVD, but the guy is booked every day of the month...

I just did a gig with Carp up in Ft. Worth, and he blew my little Austin-picker mind!!

With Gary, every note means something, is played clean as a whistle, and nothing is extraneous or wasted.

He's playing currently with Chad Rueffer (pronounced "riffer") and the Insiders. This is an all-star group with Chad fronting on guitar, his brother Reggie Rueffer on fiddle (an absolute total monster, the Gary Carpenter of fiddle), Reggie Brown on bass fiddle, and Derek Spigner on drums.

This is one of the best traditional country bands in Texas, IMHO. Carp in no small way contributes to creating that reality.
