No, mine is right in the middle of the house, next to the dining room and kitchen.
We don't have the choice of the basement, because we haven't got one!
Anyway I like to look out at the view of the Hills.
We've got our library in the attic though.
Incidentally, our house is made of bricks.
It seems common enough to me, but it seemed to be a source of endless wonder when we used to entertain visitors from Maryland

Mine, like Dave's is right in the middle of the house as well. In fact, it is the dining room, which is ridiculously small and entirely unsuitable for dining. It allows me to keep a half an eye on the kids while practicing, and generally stay involved in keeping the household afloat. If I had to disappear into a basement studio to play, I would get far less playing done. Sometimes it means I am disturbing the peace a little, but it's the only solution that seems to work. |

Yes, in the rec room over the garage . Recording gear, drum set, Steel, a small amp, guitars on racks, always set up ready to go..
I don't hardly ever bring the BIG amps up to the room, rarely.
Last year we installed a separate 3rd heating/air system in the house just for this room.
Actually I try to practice a bit every morning and leave the gear on all day and sometimes sneak in some practice time in between customer calls and EMAILS as well.

I used to use a spare bedroom for my music/studio room. But it was far too small for what I was doing. So now, I have a rental house that I own, that is my studio and practice place. Alarmed to the max to keep the riff-raff out with bars and steel security doors, since I'm not there all of the time.
Makes a great studio and can do some pretty good recordings there.

..I'm about 2/3 of the way finished with new construction of a rec room and separate music room in the basement..
..walls in the music room are R-19 fiberglass insulation between studs, sound board over the studs, RC channel to provide a space, and then 5/8 sheetrock screwed to the RC channel, so there are 4 lsyers of wall.
..it's nice and cool in the summer, no distractions..be sure to keep a de-humidifier running if you live where it gets damp...
..I intend to keep everything set up and ready to go. The point of the music room in the basement was space as a first consideration, but also the fact that it is placed and constructed for isolation from the rest of the house, so that I won't disturb other members of the family as they go about their business...
...my music room has been a spare bedroom, which everyone uses as their spare space, so it is just not conducive to sitting right down to play without having to set up half the stuff first...and the training materials, books, music, and all other accessories are scattered all over, especially after my wife cleans...
..I needed an isolated space where everything could be organized and set up all the time...
...should be done by the end of the summer...

I couldn't have a music room in my basement because of the humidity and dampness so I put a loft over my garage. Actually it is more of an "apartment" complete with kitchen, bath, bedroom, a walk in closet for equipment and a large open area to set up in. It is just great! When I used to have my equipment in the main house, my wife would come over and turn down the amp when I was playing. Not a nice thing to do! Now, she pretty much has to have an invitation to enter my sanctuary.

Yep, I'm down-under. If I'd rip out the plush carpeting, board up the fireplace and toss a little sawdust around mine would resemble a nice honky tonk -- long bar, dart board, pool table, big screen TV, and none of that NCS on the stereo.
Given the heat around here the past couple of days it's by far the coolest place in the house. Who knows, I may even start practicing again soon.

What's a basement?
Seriously, most of the houses here are build on slabs. My music room is the "formal dining room" according to the builder's floor plan. It's not isolated at all - doesn't even have a door. That's okay, though, because it's just me and the Mrs. living here, and she likes to listen.

Mine, presently, is a two car garage converted into a den (of sorts) that's shared by my wife as a garage sale room. You can guess who has more room, right? I have about 1/4 of it for setting up my whole 24 track studio complete with a set of TD 7's. Then when I set up my steel rig....there's no room at all....lol....this is going to be a temporary measure as we are trying to sell this nearly 3k sq ft and get something a little smaller with a separate building that I can turn into a complete music studio, sound-proofed to the max. Maybe by summers end........HAL

Remember back to the 70's when homes had a formal living room in the front and the family room in the back. Well, that formal living room is now my formal studio. 16'x12', bass amp, 2 guitar amps, small PA and, of course, my steel, along with my stereo system and desk. It's my beloved cave, my respite, and I go there every evening.

Bobby Lee-I know what you mean about basements.
When I lived in Santa Rosa, CA,I setup my music in the formal dining room.
It had glass french doors that I could look out in the landscaped back yard.
I always felt like playing in that room.
Now in Michigan I am setup in the Spare Bedroom. I do have a full walkout basement setup for a 3rd bath.
I was always going to do something with, it but never got around to it. But still use it for storage of all our stuff...al

I'm guess I'm lucky. I've got a whold building behind the house that I've remodeled from a garage/shop into a garage/game room/music room. Just gotta finish laying carpet this weekend, and I'm in business.
I also have one of the rare California houses with a basement, I didn't put the music room down there because it's too small (200 sq ft) I've got almost 800 sq ft out back in two rooms. But, if I had a full basement like my grandparents do back in MO, I'd put the music room down there.

We're moving in about 2 weeks into a ranch home here in Grove City. The basement is divided into 3 sections. The finished part has tile on the floor, but I'm going to put carpet down. It's dry, but I'll probably run a dehumidifier at times.Plenty of room for what I want to do. |

Yup, mine's in the basement. Humidity wasn't a problem until last summer, when it rained almost every day. I'm thinking of getting a dehumidifier. The other thing that would be nice would be a freight elevator, but dream on... |

I have a bi-level home and it sure is nice to return from a gig and unload directly from the garage into the downstairs family room (7 feet from garage) which doubles as a music/laundry room. I could never have one in a basement because of the heavy loading/unloading up and down stairs. |

WE've lived in a ranch style home for the past three years. I had a huge rec-room in the basement for my music stuff with great windows and natural light however, in order to accept a playing gig, I was faced not only with the tear-down of all my equipment, I had to huff and puff and struggle with all my might to drag the stuff to the opposite end of the 1,500 sq.ft basement, then, UP one of the narrowest flights of stairs with a hand rail further restricting movement, that I'v even seen, out thro' the double garage to the rear of my van. At that point, I usually didn't care whether I played the gig or not! It was a near impossible task.
We finally found "the perfect" little house for ME and the real estate lady discovered it on her very first day of looking for us.
The driveway is wide (could park six small cars there!) The double garage could easily accomodate four full size vehicles. Soooooo,
I grabbed the far end of the garage and built a 16 x 16 foot music room. Finally, all of my equipment, my records, stereo stuff and computers are located in but a single room. I got too anxious to get going so I have bare concrete floors, however my desk chair rolls a lot easier on it than it would on a carpeted surface. A big window affords natural light and the home has a fully functioning security system. None of the basement windows in the former house had any security; no bars; just crummy doors with glass windows directly above the locks. I was always afraid of burglary and the loss of my vintage equipment. There is only ONE STEP from the garage up to the main floor of the house. I truly have been blessed. |

Don't have a basement, but years ago I converted a 2 car garage (attached to the house) into a music and entertainment room; then added a larger 2 car garage on to the end of that.
It is the most used room in the house. I also have a small setup in my office upstairs next to the computer.
Emmons' D-10 LeGrande II upstairs
Excel U-12 Superb in the music room.
No need for any padding in either. I play at a very soft level, so it works out fine in our case. While I have a NV400 in each (Boss DD-3 also downstairs), a small Fender Champ amp with reverb in each would be much more than adaquate. I may trade the two NV's for a couple Champ amps (or similar) if I can find any.
Thanks to my precious Lord for blessings untold,

Kenny, my wife and I moved into this house New Year's eve. It is very small,2 bdrooms, but we plan to retire in the next 7 yrs, so it is perfect for us. My wife is the singer in my band SWIRL, we have been playing out for over 12 yrs together. The basement is finished, and has a drum set, 6 prs of mains(spares), a 600 watt Carvin Pa head. 4 or 5 6 strings, a bass, a PV bandit,Tko65, and a Reverend Hellhound(a truly great little amp ). I also have a ZB D10 and a GFI keyless ultra, plus a Hammond M1, and Yamaha portable keyboard. I hope to have a lot of musical fun down here. It is something I've always wanted. JimP |

A lot of houses here in So.Calif. have been converted so the 2 car garage is turned into another room replete with windows, paneling and carpet. Such was ours when we moved in 20 years ago. About 1/3 of it is my area for music and computers and gear.
It is somewhat of a constant struggle as other things keep encroaching like tubs of Christmas and Easter stuff, boxes of old books and odds and ends of the moved out kids remain. Plus, like a dummy, I moved in a giant exercise machine that's 7 feet tall and 6 feet long.
I keep trying to straighten things but I'm caught up, helpless, in the world of the second law of thermodynamics. Matter (and my space) always goes from order to disorder. |

I used to have my music room in the basement when I lived in Westerville, OH, but we don't have too many basements here in San Antonio. I have my music room what used to be my daughters bedroom. My other daughters bedroom has become my computer room for my flying programs and part office. My 2 car garage has never had a car in it. It is full of my model airplane building stuff. My wife said she not moving out so I can't take over the family room, kitchen or our bedroom.
P.S I also have a 40' x 60' airplane hangar. It has 2 real planes (one flying and the other being built + a few model airplanes. I have a spare steel set up there. My wife does't really mind because she says she always nows where to find me.
