Buddy, I have heard a song several times on our local radio station and the steel sounds like the classic Emmons sound to me. It has a lady singing with a little boy singing about his daddy even though I can hardly understand what the boy is singing. The boy sings a line "He's the only daddy I've ever had." I am wondering if you were the steel player on the song and if so do you remember who the singers are and the name of the song. I have asked before on this forum but no one knew the song I am talking about. The steel is fabulous and the tone is excellent. Any info would be appreciated especially since the radio DJ does not know who is singing the song as well.

I think the singer was Dottie West?
Dunno who steeled the song.

Peter, The lady singing could very well be Dottie West. She sure has a clean full voice. I just cannot understand what the boy is saying. It sure sounds like Buddy Emmons on steel to me but I may be wrong.

Paul,
I remember recording an album with Dottie at a studio called Youngin' Sound, as well as other sessions in a different studio. The recitation rings familiar, so there's a very good chance I'm on the song you're referring to.

The song was "Mommy, Can I Still Call Him Daddy", sung by Dottie West. It was on the album "Suffer Time" (RCA LSP 3587) from 1966.

Great playing!

Kind Regards, Walter

This is what the little fella sings:

"(Please mommy can I still call him daddy I know he's treated us so bad
Please mommy can I still call him daddy for he's the only daddy I ever had)"

And, you're right, Walter. Great playing!

Thanks you guys for all the responses. That is exactly the song I am talking about. I was certain it was Buddy Emmons playing the steel. I can recognize his sound almost anywhere. Thank you Buddy for your kindness in responding. Your playing has blessed me more than you could possibly know. One more question, who was the little boy singing and is the album still available?

Thank you Paul... I’m sorry but I can’t help you on who the little boy was or the availability of the album.
And Jim; yes I’m extremely happy to have guys like Walter around to remember things for me, especially the part about the great playing. I had almost forgotten.

Buddy,

No wonder that you forgot about a certain song - you played (and still play!) so much great stuff (actually everything you do!), I can imagine it's hard not to lose track about the "when and where"!

For Paul: The song is included on "The Essential Dottie West" (RCA 66782-2). That is a compilation with a good overview over Dottie's career. It is still available at Amazon.

Kind Regards, Walter

Buddy:
If you get caught up in any more "seniors" moments about the great material you have supplied the world of music with (on the country side, anyway), just take a browse thru the Rebel™, Ricky and Jeff site. You are very well represented there.

Thank you.

Graham, what do you mean "on the country side anyway!" ???? Buddy is the greatest jazz steel guitarist ever. (not only country!)

Doug:
Maybe what I mean is that I only have COUNTRY intros, breaks and turn-arounds on the site and Buddy is well represented there.

The boy was the son of Dottie West. I have heard that his name is Eric and there is a rumor he is on the forum still creating incomprehensible messages.

Just Kidding, Eric!
