¿What soultions are there for this problem?

When bending nehind the bar I have to stop damping bahind the bar and some notes have a horrible ringing sound from the string vibrating both sides of the bar.

¿Any ideas?

Are you pushing down, or pulling the string towards you?

Im pulling the string toward me. Works fine....but on the other strings I have no contact other than the bar....so they vibrate behind the bar too.

For a noticeable example of this place the bar at the 12th fret, dont let your left hand touch the strings, just hold the bar, and pluck strings UGH!!!!

I use my ring finger and damp with the pinky.
It's kind of tricky at first to keep your pinky still while pulling with the ring finger, but I got used to it.

I do this all the time automatically, but had forgotten exactly how I do it. What I described previously was just plain wrong. Now, after I've oberved myself critically, I will tell you that I play with index finger on top of a grooved Scheerhorn bar, gently sandwiched between thumb and middle finger. At the same time I'm muting behind the bar ring finger and pinkie -- and also blocking with my right palm and picks, a lot of the time. When I bend the 1st or 2nd string with my ring finger, I catch myself taking my thumb off the bar and bracing it against the side of the guitar fingerboard for a good, hard pull. And consciously pushing down on the bar a tiny bit as I pull so that it stays in full contact with the strings. What I also noticed was, as I brace my thumb and pull, my left hand rotates a bit clockwise, so that the muting fingers are extended even further over the strings behind the bar.

Jerry Douglas doesn't seem to worry that much about damping when pullig behind the bar:

I haven't worked enough on this myself to really have much advice to offer.....

What's up with the upside down question mark? I don't have that on my keyboard.

Curt - If you had a Spanish keyboard, you would have one. That's how a question is punctuated in Spanish.

¡Curt!

¡Great question! It´s a Spanish thing and ¿why bother? Well I think it´s a great idea....helps specially if you are reading out loud, because it´s very easy to start reading a sentence as a statement only to discover too late that it´s a question.

example

Paul Franklin is as good on nonpedal as he is on pedal steel.

inow read it again out loud as

Paul Franklin is as good on nonpedal as he is on pedal steel?

much better to be warned in advance that its

¿Paul Franklin is as good on nonpedal as he is on pedal steel?

Anyway having hijacked my own thread I must get back and say thanks for the replies. I have learnt it wrong and bend with my ring finger...maling it impossible to damp. I will now have to RElearn with the middle finger. I HATE relearning, much more difficult than learning right in the first place.

I have seen Several people use the ring finger. The above picture shows Jerry using the ring. Bobbe's tape shows the ring. I use the ring (though not well)

My vote- ring!

Question- Does the spanish key board have all of the letters in spanish too?????

I just saw Harry Dietrich (above post) play at the NJ Steel Jam yesterday. I had to look over his way several times to see what I was hearing him play. He had a cool lapsteel on a stand. I almost thought he was bending the whole neck...just kidding. He really has that string pull technique down expertly. Yeah, he uses the ring finger too..I didn't notice if he kept his pinkie finger down. TX

That's because he's playing faster than anyone can listen. By the time you try to pick out one of his techniques, the tune is over and everyone has gone home....

Now for grammer 101......

Quote:
¿Paul Franklin is as good on nonpedal as he is on pedal steel?

That is construed as a question ONLY if you have a Jewish accent. Otherwise it's,...IS Paul Franklin as good on non pedal as he is on pedal steel?

example....

(no accent) "I should play at your cousin's wedding for nothing."

(with accent) "I should play at your cousin's wedding for nothing?"

I spent a delightful afternoon with Garland Nash, and watched him play some amazing DOUBLE string bends behind the bar, pulling one string a half step and the other a whole step; needless to say I am not even gonna try that for years yet. And that was with a 1" bar. Yikes.

Billy Robinson plays superb behind-the-bar bends as well. He recommends using other fingers on the string to support the bend if it's on a wound string. Here area couple of my pet pull string licks from deep storage ...
