Anybody have one, or had one? Made by Kay I believe. What releative position do they occupy in the old-lap-steel-value-continum?
(value is subjective I know!)

| I've got one--bought it pretty cheap on ebay 3-4 years ago with DOA electronics. Got distracted before I got around to fixing it. It's cool looking which is probably why I got it. Have no idea where it fits on your ladder but I suspect it's not too high up there. Maybe I'll look it over and see where the problem lies. Oh great. Another project. |

I bought a DOA from a guy in the neighborhood. Half the pickup worked and the other half was dead. I sent the whole control plated to Bill Lawrence to fix. They remagnetized the magnet, and now it works as good as can be with the pickup that came with it. I had never seen a paper bobbin before.

| I bought one off of Ebay for sentimental reasons. My uncle who influenced me toward lap steel guitar 40 years ago bought one in the late 40s from the Sears Roebuck catalog. The word then was that Gibson was building these for distribution through Sears. Can anyone verify that? They are good looking lap steels if they haven't been beat up. |

| George, I didn't imply that the instrument had the word "Gibson" on it (if that's what you meant when you put "Gibson" in quotes). Rather, the word was that Gibson was making these steels on contract with Sears for Sears distribution. If you compare this with like steels sold by Montgomery Ward during the same period, they look much the same as perhaps by the same manufacturer, but the MW model had a different name. FWIW |

I believe the Kays were made right here in Chicago at the Harmony factory. They certainly have that brittle Harmony/Supro finish on them. I've seen this same pickup in a Silvertone model which was made by Harmony.
