I got a call from Bill Nauman yesterday inviting me to come to the Avi Casino near Laughlin Nevada, just 55 miles from my home to hear the band he was playing piano in and also to get a chance to hear one of the great steel players from the Vegas area who many of you know as Buzz Evans. I took my 14 year old son Tanner along for the ride and a chance to meet and hear Bill and Buzz. The ride was well worth the drive. Buzz and Bill were complimenting each other musically on stage and you could see the admiration each had for the other although it was clear to me Bill was in heaven on stage with Buzz. I really enjoyed hearing Buzz again since the last time I heard and met him was back when Scottie put on the Steel convention in Reno Nevada back around the mid 80's or so. Buzz is also a guitar monster. He was playing a beautiful Mullen through an Evans amp. His tone put me in mind of both Brumley on E-9th and Chalker on C-6th. He has a real gift for the swing stuff and is plenty speedy on both necks. I heard some real tasty and tricky bar bouncing on open string licks that I haven't heard that I can remember. This cat can go. On the break they came over to the table and set through the break and we had a nice visit. I will try to catch them the next time they come to my area. I hope the Southwest Steel Guitar Asociation in Mesa Arizona will invite him to play next year, I think he would be a fine addition to the show. Take care all.
