Hi folks, I recently joined the forum to pass along information for my father-in-law Kayton Roberts. Kayton wanted to let you know that he will be playing the ISGC in St Louie this year. He's working out the times with Scotty, but I do know he is planning to play during the Hawaiian set and he's excited about that.

Kayton recently finished a new CD which is comprised of many of Hank Snow's greatest hits. He will be loading the back of the van with CD's for the St. Louis trip! And for those not able to attend the ISGC we'll be offering an opportunity to buy them very soon.

Looking forward to sharing in on the fun with KR.

Thanks,
Les

Les, thanx for hookin' up with us SGForum folk and letting us in on the good news about your Father in law's future appearance and the fact that his CD(s?) will soon be available.

He's certainly one of the greats, and a unique performer that needs to be seen and heard way more than we get the opportunity to enjoy.

Let him know we wish him all the best and hope he can get to more shows and possibly release a DVD of his red hot Fender exploits some day.

Thanks for the info Les -- I doubt that I will be in St Louis but Kayton has always been one of the best. I saw him once in Nashville with Hank Snow -- I have three or four LP's of his playing. We have been going to Myrtle Beach for the last 8 years or so and go to the Carolina Opry when there. Louie Roberts (Kayton's Son) sings in the show and is on the calibre of Marty Robbins -- actually he made a tape which was a tribute to Marty, excellent tape.

If you know of any other CD's or tapes that Kayton or Louie made, please post them or e-mail me. Thanks.

Pardon the intrusion. I always like to "see" all these great ones of steel guitar. Always inspiring.

Great news Les.

Question - The album notes on Kayton's "Bells of St. Mary" LP mentions a recording of Hawaiian tunes Louie Roberts did with his father called "Songs of the Islands". Is this one still available ?

Many thanks.

I saw Kayton on the Opry TV show backing Hank III and he sounded great. Really raw and aggressive sounding, no fuzztone, just a good "tubey" sound.

Les,

Since you are related to Kayton and a part of the family, maybe you can answer this question.

It appears that Kayton like Hawaiian music, will he ever play at the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Assn convention in Joliet, Illinois or the Aloha International Steel Guitar convention in Winchester, Indiana?

These are the two big convention where Hawaiian music is featured big time. It is played in every style and touch. IMHO

I have always enjoyed Kayton's playing, especially since it is non-pedal.

Aloha,
Don

Evening folks,

After speaking with Kayton this evening he wanted me to pass along his thanks to Drew, Larry R, and Evelyn for the well wishes.

Ron and Jeff, we're making a few changes to the liner notes and should have the new CD ready for shipment in a week or two. The plan is to offer them at shows and mail order using PayPal and money order so stay tuned. We have discussed the possibility of a DVD project but it's tough to get Kayton out of his vegetable garden during the summer. Possible winter project?

Warren, all of Kayton's old Stoneway recordings are out of print but plans to reproduce some if not all are being discussed. Kayton's son Louie currently has three recordings available, Committed to Christ, Country and Yodeling favorites, and A tribute to Marty Robbins. These can be purchased by calling 1-800-843-6779 or online at www.cgp.net

Larry, we loved the picture. Kayton's sister Alberta, or as the family calls her "Aunt Butt", will be attending the convention in St. Louis again this year. I'm sure we can persuade her to belt out another rendition of Beyond the Reef.

Dave, the recording "Songs of the Islands" was published under the label Round Robin and is out of print. Occasionally you'll see it in eBay, but it's tough one to find.

And Don, Kayton wanted me to let you know that he does love Hawaiian music and hopefully he will be able to attend one of the conventions in the near future.

Whew, hope we didn't miss anyone. Feel free to pass along questions and I'll keep the answers coming.

Thanks,
Les

Most of us "collect" steel guitars and usually play a variety of them over the years. However Kayton has played that red CUSTOM exclusively and played it so well !

Jeez, that's weird,'cause I called Kayton,a while back,& asked him to come out to our NTSGA jam,& he informed me that he was "not actively involved in playing anymore". It was shortly after that, that he went all the way up to Canada to do a show.
Hmmm!

[QUOTE]...he (Kayton) informed me that he was "not actively involved in playing anymore".

When he comes to our Hawaiian steel guitar conventions in Joliet and Winchester, we will not consider him as actively involved in playing.

We will say that he is inactively playing, but nevertheless playing.

At our conventions, we are VERY adept at getting people to play that consider themselves retired from playing.

We do a number on them called the "HAWAIIAN THING" and people love it.

Aloha,
Don

Evening folks,

Here's a quick update from KR:

George, there's a funny story behind the red steel. The abbreviated and less funny version is that Hank's band years ago began using VOX which were primarily red. Hank thought Kayton's blonde steel would show up better on camera and match the other equipment. Kayton bought a can of "Chinese Red" paint and the rest is history.

Smiley, I can attest to the fact that Kayton has become obsessed with his vegetable garden and does play only on occasion. The show in Canada that you refer to would be the Annual Hank Snow Tribute held every third weekend in August, which is one event Kayton always honors. Since Hanks death Kayton and Roger Carroll continue to visit the many friends they have made over the years as Rainbow Ranch Boys. This years show is August 19, 20, and 21 in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. KR says come see him!

Don, the "Hawaiian Thing" sounds much like what his wife would call the "Iva Thing". Kayton has a love for the music of the islands and will try and make one of the events in the near future.

Take care folks, and have a great week,
Les

Hi Les

Thanks for the information on Kayton. I met Kayton way back in the early 70s when Hank Snow and the Rainbow Ranch Boys did an outdoor show near Dresser, Wisconsin. Kayton told me then, that Fiddler Chubby Wise helped him get the job with Hank. Over the years I met Kayton in Nashville a couple of times. One time was at "Little Roy" Wiggens Music Store and another time backstage at the Opry. I know Scotty invited Kayton to St. Louis many, many times without success. It must of been that vegetable garden then too.??
