Howdie Everyone
I've been reading the forum for a couple of months & have just joined today. I've been playing guitar for over 40 years (gasp!)I have recently purchased a Sho-Bud Maverick & a really nice Sho-Bud Lloyd Green LDG model. Im having a great time with a couple of how to video's.
Its my goal to someday join a horrible little country band & become an alcoholic.
But, enough about me...
My question is this.......In all my years of playing music I don't believe I've ever heard of a singing steel player, much less a singing pedal steel player......
Is there someone out there I've missed?

I sing and play - but not at the same time!
Check out Joe Wright - he's doing an terrific job with great singing and great playing at the same time!
Oh, almost forgot: Welcome to the Forum!
Kind Regards, Walter

Well, let's see...uhh...Stu Basore used to sing a song or two when he played for Kitty Wells, and he also wrote one of Ruby Wright's big records!
Right, Stu? |

Yes indeed, check out Joe Wright. Also one of the best I ever heard, was the late Claude Brownell. He was excellent doing it.
But you are correct, most don't I believe. The intensity with which most steel players occupy their thoughts precludes singing while playing IMO.

I don't know if he does it while he plays, but the great Dicky Overbey is an awesome singer/songwriter (also my favorite steeler). Just listen to self-penned "The Last Waltz" on his recent CD "HonkyTonkMemories.com" - It will send a chill up your spine!
As a side note: If you love to hear the pedal steel and fiddle playing hard-core country music as well as it can be played you must not be without this CD. My absolute favorite CD I own. I've never been one to really single out a favorite of anything, but the duo of Dicky Overbey and Bobbe Flores are without a doubt my "Dream Team". They are my Heroes.
Respectfully,
Dave Burr |

A friend of my just gave me a cassett of Buddy Emmons singing everything on the album. Its called Buddy Emmons Sings Bob Wills. Its great. I've only listened to it a couple of times in the short time I've had it but I think the only instrumental is Boot Heel Drag. There you go...the King of steel guitar on vocals. |

W Franco, I've got that album on CD. It's also one of my fav's. I for one would like to hear more of Mr. Emmons singing.
Here is a post from a while back. http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum15/HTML/001155.html
Apparently Jimmy Day was also quite the singer. I love the song "If not for Jennifer".

I had the pleasure of working with Hal Higgins, In the Ranch House Motor Inn in Springfield Mass, in the early 70's. He sang, and played the steel, and is excellent at both!

I guess you can add my name to the list, been doing it for over forty years.
I've always wondered what it would be like to stand up and play rythmn guitar and sing and have somebody like Buddy or Lloyd playing steel behind me, oh well, probably never know.
